The RIA Target & Translational Sciences department is an agile environment, with a culture that is science and patient-focused. Our mission is to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identify the most effective target and the right patient population, and close the gap between bench science and bedside clinical practice.

A key aspect in translational science is biomarkers to drive patient segmentation, demonstrate target engagement, guide dose selection and bridge to clinical outcome. The Biomarker Scientist is accountable for discovery of new respiratory precision and target engagement biomarkers and their development and validation. It is a role that requires a strong scientific background as well as excellent technical skills. The individual will also have outstanding team working skills and a proven track record of working collaboratively to ensure scientific excellence and robust delivery to projects.

Accountabilities and responsibilities:

* Responsible for design, execution, interpretation and reporting of biomarker studies
* Expert in specific technologies to enable the respiratory biomarker discovery platform, which may include genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenomics, lipidomics etc.
* Inventor/discoverer of novel biomarkers
* Proactively exploit available omics-initiatives, both internal or and external, through collaboration or publicly available, to discover and develop novel, innovative biomarker propositions
* Works closely with Data Science and others to validate knowledge extracted from big omics-datasets through robust biomarker analysis in human tissue
* Works closely with Clinical Disease Knowledge to use experimental medicine (MeMo studies) to identify and validate novel biomarkers and support recall by genotype clinical study designs
* Works closely with TS lead and TV lead scientists in Precision Medicine Discovery to meet the need for novel biomarkers of patient segmentation, demonstration of target engagement and bridging to clinical outcome
* Interacts closely across other parts of the organization such as DSM and DS to identify and employ biomarker technologies and methodologies that will support novel biomarker identification
* Drives innovation and scientific excellence in Biomarker Discovery through internal scientific development and external collaborations
* Work collaboratively with other Teams within and outside of the IMED.
* Makes AZ scientifically visible by publishing scientific papers and presenting data at conferences.
* Contributes to a science-driven and entrepreneurial organization hungry for new ideas, innovative ways of working and continuous learning
* Positive can-do attitude, eager to learn in each interaction.
* Collaborate closely with other teams to drive efficiency and take advantage of knowledge and experiences.

Essential Requirements

* PhD or equivalent with a strong experimental drive and background in basic science related to respiratory research.
* Technically expert in specific biomarker discovery and analysis platform. May include but not limited to genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenomics, lipidomics, NGS, mass spec etc.
* Experience and solid understanding of respiratory disease biology.
* Experience and knowledge of the biological basis for patient segmentation.
* Familiar with biomarker invention and implementation.
* Understanding of molecular pathways and mechanisms related to respiratory diseases.
* Broad understanding of several technologies and methodologies along with excellent scientific laboratory skills and ability to experimentally address key scientific questions.
* Excellent skills in hypothesis forming and testing, able to draw conclusions and suggest next steps based on the experimental data.
* Good understanding of the drug discovery and development process, from lead identification through clinical trials.
* Excellent collaborative skills
* Good networking and communication (written and oral) skills and a strong delivery focus
* Track record of delivering state-of-the-art biomarkers to projects in discovery and/or development setting
* Post-doc experience or otherwise relevant scientific research experience.
* Experience in pharmaceutical R&D (desirable).
* Strong publication record.
