Respiratory is one of AstraZeneca's main therapy areas. Our aim is to transform asthma and COPD treatment through inhaled combinations at the core of care, biologics for the unmet needs of specific patient populations, and scientific advancements in disease modification.

Our Respiratory research is mainly carried out at the dynamic AstraZeneca Research site in Gothenburg, Sweden. However, collaboration is a way of life for us. Collaboration with our AstraZeneca colleagues in Cambridge UK, the MedImmune research units in Gaithersburg and Cambridge, as well as numerous academic institutions and partners around the globe gives us access to a worldwide network of expertise and innovation.

To further strengthen our expertise and capacity in each of these research areas we are currently recruiting world-class scientists to join our department. Are you ready to explore what science can do?

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The RIA Target & Translational Sciences department is an agile environment, with a culture that is science and patient-focused. Our mission is to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identify the most effective target and the right patient population, and close the gap between bench science and bedside clinical practice.

This role covers key aspects of proteomic and in silico biomarker analysis enabling translational science. In this role, you are accountable for providing analysis in support of both these key areas. It is a role that requires a strong scientific background as well as excellent technical skills. You will also have outstanding team working skills and a consistent record of working collaboratively to ensure scientific excellence and robust delivery to projects.

The seniority of the role will be adapted to suit chosen candidates' background and experience.

Accountabilities and responsibilities:

* Identify patient endotypes from large cohort proteomic studies utilising unsupervised and supervised machine learning approaches
* Design and analyse exploratory proteomic/biomarker studies within respiratory diseases
* Identify novel drug targets from proteomic data sets
* Identify and propose project specific biomarkers that reflect target engagement, predict clinical efficacy and improve patient selection
* Work compliantly and with high ethical standards with patient level data
* Work closely with the Data Science function to validate knowledge extracted from big 'omics-datasets through robust biomarker analysis in human tissue
* Work collaboratively with other teams within and outside of the IMED RIA
* Drive innovation and scientific excellence in Target and Translational Science through internal scientific development and external collaborations
* Make AZ scientifically visible by publishing scientific papers and presenting data at conferences

Essential Requirements

We believe that you collaborate closely with other teams to drive efficiency and take advantage of knowledge and experiences. With a positive can-do attitude, you are eager to learn in each interaction. Furthermore, you will contribute to a science-driven and entrepreneurial organization with a hunger for new ideas, innovative ways of working and continuous learning

* PhD or equivalent in e.g. bioinformatics or statistics, ideally focusing on respiratory research
* Technically expert in Bioinformatics and Data Science. May include but not limited to in silico biomarker analysis, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and analysis of broader NGS datasets
* A deep understanding of respiratory disease biology
* A strong drive to apply analytical techniques to experimental data
* Experience in multivariate statistics and machine learning
* Experience of analysing output from proteomic platforms
* Excellent skills in hypothesis forming and testing, able to draw conclusions and suggest next steps based on the experimental data
* Deep understanding of the drug discovery and development process, from target identification through clinical trials
* Excellent social and networking skills
* Great written and oral communication skills
* Track record of delivering state-of-the-art Bioinformatics insight to projects in discovery, development or an academic setting
* Strong publication record

Desirable Requirements

* Post-doc experience or otherwise relevant scientific research experience
* Experience in pharmaceutical R&D
