hela Sverige Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top universities. The University has around 46 000 students and 8 500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
Your team
SoftiMAX is a soft X-ray beamline focussed on spectro-microscopy and coherent imaging techniques, with 2 branch lines.
The first branch delivers a nanoprobe beam for Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) and ptychography measurements, catering to many research fields including environmental science, life sciences, advanced materials and magnetism. The second branch has a stronger focus on exploring coherence, with diffraction imaging, holography and x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) on solid state samples. The SoftiMAX team currently consists of 3 permanent staff, a postdoc, and a shared technician.
Your role
We are now looking for a researcher with a strong background in soft x-ray microscopy on magnetic materials and/or the use and development of coherent x-ray microscopy techniques, to join the SoftiMAX team. As part of the team, you will ensure optimal operation of the beamline plus its two end-stations. In addition, you will take an active role in strategic development of the beamline, shaping the user community, as well as have a chance to pursue your own project(s) at the beamline.
Main work tasks
- As part of the team, you will actively help maintain and run the beamline, the end-stations and data processing tools, with a primary focus on magnetic experiments and/or coherent techniques, applicable to both branches
- You will support your share of users during the planning, setup, and execution of experiments, and discuss development of e.g. user sample environments or analysis code for experiments, as well as perform outreach to attract new users
- As a scientist, you are ready to perform scientific research and work on method development that fits to the SoftiMAX beamline and promote your results within the (prospective) user community and at conferences
To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications
- PhD in natural sciences in a subject relevant to SoftiMAX
- Demonstrated experience in performing novel and cutting-edge experiments, with soft x-ray microscopy for magnetic materials and/or coherent techniques using X-rays
- Good Python programming skills, a working knowledge of collaborative software tools, and experience with the implementation of data acquisition or analysis algorithms
- You have a good track record of published articles in peer reviewed journals highlighting findings from your research and experimental activities
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Good command of English, good communication skills and being a good fit within the team
Qualifications below are seen as merits
- Experience in instrumentation development: including timing, novel optics, in-situ environments, cryogenics, nano-positioning and/or scanning set ups
- Experience in other, relevant x-ray (imaging) techniques, like fluorescence mapping, hard x-ray coherent diffraction and/or tomography, or experience in magnetic measurements and/or STM/AFM
As a person you are someone who actively seeks out new possibilities and pursues novel ideas. You are interested in interdisciplinary and collaborative research and able to work effectively with research groups of diverse backgrounds as well as engineers and technicians.
