Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities. The University has around 44 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Science division is divided into a number of supporting groups and three scientifically oriented groups, Imaging, Diffraction and Scattering, and Spectroscopy.

These groups are further divided into teams based on beamline or scientific technique. Each team has the task to develop and support the instrumentation and scientific activities at the different beamlines. The aim is to maintain and develop state of the art equipment at stable operation.

We are looking for a Beamline Scientist to work as a part of the Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (APXPS) team with primary location at HIPPIE, a soft x-ray beamline dedicated for APXPS on solids and liquids. The HIPPIE beamline began user operations in 2018 and currently hosts a selection of sample environments which allows performing APXPS experiments within the catalysis, electrochemistry, 2D materials, surface science, and environmental chemistry.
The beamline also hosts IRRAS spectrometer that allows simultaneous FTIR and APXPS in situ measurements and high-pressure catalytic reactor for offline activity studies at real conditions. In Spring 2023 a second branchline hosting a dedicated electrochemistry endstation (solid-liquid endstation) will be delivered to external users. Supporting the beamline operation and development of scientific areas is a team of two scientists and a postdoc with various technical backgrounds and a wide range of scientific interests.
The staff of HIPPIE forms the APXPS teams together with the SPECIES beamline. Currently, the team has nine members, who work together on the support and development of the APXPS programme at MAX IV.

The successful candidate will be offered
• Excellent possibilities to drive scientific research or state-of-the-art instrumentation development in collaboration with the beamline team, and the users.
• A stimulating APXPS team where we help each and push the limits of scientific instrumentation.
• A unique chance to engage with a large number of research projects performed by our users.

The work tasks of the beamline scientist include, but are not limited to, the following
• Active participation in the operation, maintenance, and development of the solid-liquid endstation of the branch B and FTIR spectrometer integrated into the solid-gas endstation at the branch A of the beamline.
• Active development scientific and technical programs (own and in collaboration with users) enabled by the instrumentation from the solid-liquid endstation and FTIR spectrometer.
• Active participation in the support and maintenance of the beamline and the end stations in collaboration with the entire HIPPIE and APXPS team.
• Participation in the development of existing and new functionalities of the beamline and the end station in collaboration with the entire beamline and the APXPS team.
• Interaction with and support of user groups

Qualifications
The successful candidate must;
• Hold a PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline.
• Provide documented experience of performing and interpreting synchrotron based APXPS experiments.
• Demonstrate knowledge of electrochemistry and provide documented experience in use of synchrotron-based spectroscopic method for studying electrochemical systems. Experience with use of operando / in situ APXPS for studying electrochemical systems is considered as advantage.
• Demonstrate knowledge of infrared spectroscopy and provide documented experience in use of IRRAS for studies of solid-gas interactions. Experience with AP-IRRAS considered as advantage.
• Provide documented experience of working with ultrahigh vacuum instrumentation and scientific instrumentation at the synchrotrons. Experience with developing sample environments for APXPS will be highly valued.
• Experience in user support at the synchrotrons is considered as an advantage.
• Software development skills are considered as an advantage; especially experience with Sardana and Python.
• Experience in design and simulation software (Solidworks, Comsol, etc.) is considered an advantage

The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate the ability work in a team, good communication skills and good command of the English language.

Would you like to work in a challenging and supporting environment? Then join us and take the opportunity to make a real difference!
