The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Beam Diagonostics Scientist position in the Accelerator Division.

Description of division

The Accelerator Division, where the Beam Diagnostics Section is located, is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the 5 MW, superconducting proton accelerator. The Beam Diagnostics Section works with our partners around the world to develop and deploy the 22 instrumentation systems that measure proton beam parameters throughout the accelerator and within the target station. This is an exciting time for the ESS project: design, construction and commissioning are now occurring simultaneously, and this will continue for several years to come. Description of main responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced scientist to join our team; one who enjoys making accelerators work and discovering why they don't work. The main responsibilities would be to:

• Lead the development, construction and deployment of several beam diagnostic systems
• Commission diagnostic systems and participate in accelerator commissioning
• Assure that diagnostic systems meet requirements for measurement performance and machine protection
• Research new technologies and techniques with the goal of improving ESS facility performance
• Coordinate work with other parts of the ESS organization such as beam physics, operations, and controls
• Represent the beam diagnostics section to external stakeholders in person and by authoring documentation and publications

Some travel will be required to work with collaborators throughout Europe. Some shift work in the control room will be required during commissioning and machine studies.

Qualifications

• PhD in a technical field plus 5 years of experience in accelerator diagnostics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience in designing and operating beam diagnostic instrumentation at a particle accelerator facility
• Knowledge of the technologies applied to instrumentation
• Candidates should have a record of individual accomplishment and also have demonstrated the ability work productively within an interdisciplinary team
• Previous experience at a major national or international laboratory is preferred
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage

Duration & Location

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
