Background of thesis project

Volvo Construction Equipment, a division of Volvo Group, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction equipment such as wheel loaders, dumpers, excavators, road machinery, and compact machines. The production is distributed in Europe, Asia, North America and South America and Volvo CE employs approximately 15000 peoples around the globe. To maintain a leading position, it is important to develop innovative products with high quality and, at the same time, high energy-efficient powertrains. In the journey towards electrification of our machines Volvo is investigating a variety of solutions for a high operating time of the electrified machines.

Description of thesis work

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate a flexible battery system to enable a quick replacement of the battery on the machine. The machine is then able to continue operation when the battery is discharged with a quick replacement to a charged battery. This has the potential benefits on machine uptime, operational flexibility, battery durability and site infrastructure. Different aspects of such a system will be investigated, such as mechanical, electric and software interfaces. A literature study will be performed to map existing solutions and previous research on the topic. A concept study is then performed supported by calculations, modelling and simulations.

The students shall to be skilled in mechanical design and electrical engineering and have a great interest in electromobility.
