The European Spallation Source ERIC in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Associated Director.

Description of directorate and main responsibilities
The Associated Director for ESH&Q (Environmental, Safety and Health & Quality) will be responsible for developing and maintaining the strategy for the directorate. Specific responsibilities include developing and implementing the regulatory compliance strategy for the ESS regarding ESH&Q. This includes, providing staff and direction for the facility design, installation, commissioning, and operation. It also includes, interactions with different regulators and the public, and implementing appropriate policies and procedures for ESS, partner organization, and in-kind contributions together with Head of Division Quality and Head of Division ES&H.  

As Associated Director you will work with the ESS technical organizations to develop and implement the optimum regulatory positions for the ESS, based upon planned operations and interactions, with SSM staff and other regulators. Today, there is an existing ESH and Q staff of 15 people that needs support and a senior mentor to ensure that strategies and plans are understood and incorporated in all ESS design activities. You need to develop the culture where all ESS staff takes personal responsibility for ensuring ESH&Q programs support the ESS mission.

You will serve as the spokesperson for ESS on ESH&Q topics, and must concisely identify issues, evaluate alternatives to be considered, and be part of the ESS management team to optimize the ESH and Q programs. You will work with our external Environmental, Safety, and Health Advisory Committee (ESHAC) to identify opportunities to improve programs and establish priorities for upcoming activities.

You will report to General Director for ESS.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Science or Engineering is required

• 10 plus years experience in developing ESH&Q programs at a major R&D facility or Project.

• Have experience from leadership positions

• Experience at a high-power accelerator or neutron facility would be an advantage.

• Experience of working in an international environment is essential

• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
