Identification of new potential drugs against obesity may require detailed knowledge of the physiological mechanisms that control food intake. Almost half of obese patients are women, four out of five patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery are women, and most eating disorders are much more common in women. Nevertheless, nearly all pre clinical research on the central nervous mechanisms and the neuronal circuits involved in controlling food intake and in the development of obesity, is performed on male animals. Recent studies clearly show that the physiology and pathophysiology of eating behavior may differ between male and female animals and humans.
