The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, disease ecology, environmental science and engineering, evolutionary biology, microbiology, and natural science didactics.

The faculty has offered post-graduate education within in science education research since 2003. The research milieu focusing on science education is part of a collaboration between three faculties and currently engages nine academic staff and five doctoral students. Our research focus is on meaning-making of science in educational practice ranging from preschool to university levels. National as well as international collaborations provide valuable contributions to our various ongoing research projects.

Job description

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science at Linnaeus University is seeking an outstanding associate senior lecturer in the field of natural science didactics with a focus biology didactics. The position entails the running of an independent research program focused on biology didactics and the teaching, supervision and examination of bachelor and advanced level students, primarily in teacher training programs, and related administration.



Requirements - appointment career development

Formal eligibility requires that the applicant has been awarded his/her doctoral thesis in natural science didactics with a focus on biology didactics, or its equivalent, and be formally qualified as a senior high school (gymnasieskolan) biology teacher, or equivalent. In the first instance, applicants who have been awarded their doctoral degree, or equivalent, no more than seven years before the application deadline shall be considered (HF chap 4, section 12 a). The successful candidate shall have a capacity to teach in the Swedish language, or shall have attained the necessary skills to do so by the start of the third year of employment. Support for language training shall be provided.

In order to qualify for this appointment the candidate must also have:

• a track record of international peer reviewed publications in the area,
-a documented capacity to work both independently and as part of a team,

• a high degree of proficiency in written and spoken English



Assessment grounds

Other assessment criteria include, documented:

• experience of applying for research funding,
-experience of teaching and teaching-related administration at the university level and/or experience of teaching in school contexts.

In the overall assessment of an applicant, particular significance will be attached to the applicant's potential, after completion of the four year position, to lead a competitive research program that complements and strengthens the ongoing science didactics-oriented research of the university, including responsibility for PhD student supervision, and to deliver high quality contributions to teaching at all levels and related administration.



The following aspects shall be taken into account in association with the assessment for promotion to permanent senior lecturer:
In the assessment procedure, the candidate's ability to independently initiate and conduct research in biology didactics of a high scientific quality shall be assessed. This shall be reflected in an ability to obtain funding for research activities in competition, the capacity to publish in recognized international peer reviewed journals, and service to the scientific community. Equal weight shall be placed on the candidate's documented proficiency in teaching and supervision over the BSc and MSc levels, as well as in teaching related administration and outreach related activities. A well-established capacity to work well independently and as part of a group should be demonstrated.
