Subject area
The subject of the position includes resistance biology with a focus on plant stress mechanisms and new breeding techniques to reduce the effects of climate change and pathogen attacks.

Duties
The Assistant Professor will have their own area of responsibility and will be given development opportunities to be able to qualify as docent and Senior Lecturer in the subject of the position. The position includes teaching and research in the subject. The Assistant Professor in Resistance Biology will conduct basic research to identify new genes and mechanisms underlying plant stress tolerance, to mitigate climate change and increase resistance to pathogens. Research will also involve identifying new resistance or susceptibility factors and integrating precision breeding tools, such as CRISPR, to improve crop resilience. The position includes applied perspectives, especially for Swedish-relevant crops (such as potatoes) in both laboratory and field environments. The research is expected to be conducted in collaboration with researchers within the department and SLU, as well as through national and international collaboration.

The Assistant Professor is expected to develop the subject by:

• Planning, leading and implementing research projects and seeking external funding in competition
• Publishing scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals
• Contributing to scientific development in collaboration with the subject area manager
• Initiating the development of one's own research group
• Participating in doctoral education as an assistant supervisor
• Conducting research-based teaching at all levels of the educational cycle
• Continuously developing oneself as a teacher and developing pedagogical leadership
• Developing and maintaining national and international networks with researchers
• Collaborating and communicating with relevant stakeholders in the agricultural industry

The department has a parallel language work environment. The Assistant Professor will be able to perform most academic tasks in English. However, since Swedish is the official working language of the university, the candidate is expected to achieve a functional level of Swedish within four years of taking up the position. The department undertakes to provide support to the candidate in achieving this goal.

Qualifications
Candidates who hold a PhD or have equivalent academic qualifications are eligible for employment as Assistant Professor. Priority will be given to candidates who have received a PhD or equivalent qualifications no longer than seven years before the application deadline. Other candidates may also be considered if there are extraordinary grounds for doing so. Extraordinary grounds refer absence due to illness, parental leave or similar circumstances.

For employment as Assistant Professor, the applicant must have a doctoral degree relevant to the subject of employment or a related discipline. Knowledge of and experience in plant molecular biology is also required.

Good ability to communicate in English, both spoken and written, is a requirement.

Assessment criteria
As assessment criteria for employment, the degree of such competence that is a requirement for qualification for the position shall primarily apply.

In the evaluation for employment as an Assistant Professor, emphasis will be placed primarily on the applicant's scientific competence within the subject of the position. In addition, the applicant's potential to develop an independent research profile within the subject of the position and to meet the requirements for promotion to university lecturer within the framework of the qualification position will be assessed.

Specific competence in molecular and protein biochemical techniques to study plant stress responses and field trials with genetically edited crops relevant to the overarching subject of resistance biology is particularly meritorious.

Emphasis will also be placed on communication skills and the ability to work broadly across several of the Department 's areas of activity.

Collaborative ability and experience in administration and teaching are advantageous.

The position will be offered to the candidate who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is assessed to have the best qualifications to carry out and develop current tasks and contribute to a positive development of the operations.

Form of employment
The employment is limited to four years in accordance with the Higher Education Act.
