Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 340 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.
Duties
The main task is to accomplish a research project regarding "Genetic and functional analysis of fusion genes in pediatric brain tumors". Our research aims to identify cancer genes and investigate the oncogenic cellular mechanisms that drive tumor development and progression of brain tumors in children. Moreover, we are working to optimize and implement genetic methods in clinical diagnostics to improve tumor classification and guide targeted treatment for cancer patients. Our research group works closely with clinicians at Sahlgrenska Hospital (e.g., pathologists, pediatric oncologists, surgeons). In this research position, your role will be to perform functional analysis via cell culture experiments, as well as planning and carrying out genetic analyses (e.g., long-read sequencing) of DNA and RNA samples from pediatric brain tumor patients including data analysis. Furthermore, the work involves summarizing data, presenting results, and writing publications. We therefore assume that you can independently plan and implement new molecular genetic methods and in vitro experiments. Together with other staff in the group, you will work with retrieving/collecting, handling, and organizing samples from patients in the research biobank. We therefore expect you to have good cooperation skills and like to work in a team.
The daily tasks are mainly laboratory work involving the collection and handling of samples, DNA and RNA extraction from both fresh-frozen tissue, FFPE tissue, cultured cells, and blood, as well as sequencing with short-read (e.g., illumina), long-read (e.g., nanopore, pacbio, bionano). Genetic downstream analyzes include mutation analysis and variant interpretation of SNV/indel, structural variants and copy number changes, as well as differential expression analysis (from RNA sequencing). The results will be compared between different genetic methods. The work also includes cell culture and experimental cell biology, such as transfection, CRISPR/Cas9, protein extraction, Western blotting and immunofluorescence. Verification of results is usually done using targeted Next generation sequencing (NGS), RT-PCR/qPCR and/or sanger sequencing.
Qualifications
You should have a master's degree (MSc) in biomedicine, biotechnology, molecular biology, medicine, or equivalent education. You should have solid practical and theoretical knowledge in human genetics and tumor biology, as well as in experimental cell biology. Practical experience of sample handling from cancer patients as well as practical and analytical experience of molecular genetic methods (mentioned above) are meritorious. Experience with cell culture and in vitro experiments (e.g., transfection, CRISPR/Cas9, proliferation assays, Western blot, immunostaining) is advantageous.
As we publish our results in international journals, you should master English in speech and writing. We place high demand on independence, flexibility, accuracy, and collaborative skills. Emphasis is placed on previous experiences and personal suitability.
Employment
The employment is part time 50%, and temporary, 5 months, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
