At Onsala Space Observatory and Chalmers we now offer a permanent faculty position as Associate Professor or Professor in geodynamics, where you will be able to do this in an inspiring environment.
The department and the division
The position is in the Onsala Space Observatory Division of the Department of Space, Earth and Environment. The division includes the research group on space geodesy and geodynamics. The main interests of this research group are geodynamic phenomena and atmospheric processes, as well as the improvement of the associated measurement techniques.
As our new colleague, you will support and strengthen the research group and widen the research field. We study e.g. the deformation of the Earth's crust due to mass redistribution, inter- and intra-plate tectonics, loading effects, terrestrial and celestial reference frames, variations in earth orientation and rotation, the spatial and temporal variation of atmospheric water vapour, sea level variations, and the temporal variation of the gravity field. We address these research topics using a variety of observational techniques and the corresponding theoretical work. Currently we use geodetic VLBI, Global Navigation Satellite Systems, gravimeters, tide gauges, and ground based microwave radiometers. Cooperation with seismologists is established not least by way of the seismograph station at Onsala Space Observatory.
Our main working places are located at Onsala Space Observatory, 40 km south of Gothenburg, and---secondary---at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as Associate Professor or Professor is to perform your own research in the field of geodynamics, with an emphasis on observations, analysis and modelling of geodynamical phenomena and gravity change. You will have the responsibilty for managing, and using for research, the Superconducting Gravimeter (SG) infrastructure at the Onsala Space Observatory. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels (around 20 % full time, on average), supervising PhD students, taking part in leadership and administration, and actively applying for external funding on national and international levels. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.
Qualifications
The successfull applicant should have:
• A PhD degree in Geodynamics, Geophysics, Geodesy, Engineering Physics or an equivalent education, with thesis relevant to the research field described.
• Several years of postdoctoral research experience.
• Proven track record of university teaching and pedagogical training
• Experience with good supervision of students at BSc or MSc levels and (co-)supervision of doctoral students.
• High quality scientific research, evidenced by publication records.
• High motivation for research work, and ability to achieve results through cooperation with other researchers, both locally, nationally and internationally.
• Sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
It is meritourious to have:
• Proven experience in teaching within courses related to geodynamics.
• Previous project management or leadership positions and capability to lead projects with various partners.
• Good network within academia, both national and international.
If Swedish is not your native language, we would like you to aquire sufficient knowledge to be able to communicate and teach in Swedish within a few years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Teaching faculty at Chalmers are required to have completed couses in higher education pedagogics in accordance with SUHF's recommendations (REK 2016:1) or equivalent education for a total of at least 10 weeks of full-time study. External applicants who currently do not meet the full pedagogical requirements may be employed for a permanent position under the condition that the required education is completed within the first three years of employment. As you are expected to teach up to 20% of your working time, we will place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio.
This position is advertised as an open-rank position on either associate professor level or professor level. The selected level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. For a definition of the qualification requirements and work descriptions for the two positions, please consult our Rules of Procedure - Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty (Professor section 6.2 and Associate Professor section 6.3). Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee and external evaluators. Both the listed criteria in the job advertisment and the criteria in the document Rules of Procedure - Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty will be taken into account when evaluating candidates.
