The division of Food and Nutrition Science is now recruiting an Associate Professor to build a strong research program in food biotechnology at LIFE to enable transition towards healthy and sustainable foods. The program gets a kick-start through a 4 year pre-competitive collaboration with two large food enterprises (Lantmännen and Arla Foods), where the companies and Chalmers put up resources for recruitment of a PhD-student and postdocs to work in co-created and integrated projects with the industrial partners. The successful candidate is expected to create synergies and integrate complementary competences within in the Department in the current program.

About the department and the research
The division of Food and Nutrition Science (FNS) is one of four research divisions at the department Life Sciences (LIFE). FNS addresses major societal challenges related to sustainable food production, nutrition and health. We conduct fundamental and applied research, innovation, education and dissemination in Food and Nutrition Science with the aim to provide new knowledge and solutions that pave the way for a sustainable planet and healthy humans. Research topics span from food chemistry and food technology to molecular and data- driven nutrition (Precision Nutrition). In Food Science, we focus primarily on plant-based and marine food systems for which we develop tools and processes to promote high food quality, minimize losses throughout the value chain and allow nutrient recovery from alternative biomasses. In nutrition, we focus on human observational and intervention studies as well as cell-based model studies and apply advanced data-driven approaches and state of the art biochemical and OMICs technologies to understand and predict the role of foods, dietary components and dietary patterns in human health. The research is also related to global food security topics in an international context.

About the position
Food biotechnology is a broad area that may use molecular techniques to understand and engineer metabolic pathways and biochemical reactions related to quality improvement of conventional or underutilized food raw materials, manufacturing of food ingredients or introduction of novel raw materials into the food chain. In the context of the current position, it includes exploitation of raw materials derived from agricultural primary production or side streams thereof using fractionation and/or bioconversion with microorganisms such as yeast or bacteria or their enzymes and metabolites. The latter could comprise traditional fermentation, brewing and precision fermentation where cell factories produce specific molecules and/or remove antinutrients that may ultimately improve sensory characteristics, functional attributes and nutrient bioaccessibility.
The position may cover biotechnological processes and separation techniques to valorize agricultural raw materials and side streams. De novo production of foods or ingredients via cell cultures using biotechnology in combination with tissue engineering, molecular biology and synthetic biology could also be included as long as it feeds into development of healthy and sustainable plant-based foods or corresponding hybrid products. OMICs- techniques coupled to data-driven approaches based on machine-learning and AI are central and could be included.

Research in this area will have a direct impact on consumers, the agricultural food industry, and society. It is expected that the research will lead to new fundamental knowledge to aid the transformation into a sustainable and resilient food system that provides healthy and tasty sustainable foods for consumers in collaboration with societal actors and agricultural food industry.

Following aspects are particularly relevant, but not restricted, to this research:
• Data science to advance research within food biotechnology
• Protein and/or lipid production using single cells
• Isolation of macro-/micronutrients from underutilized agricultural biomasses
• Cellular agriculture to produce new food raw materials to integrate into a sustianable food chain
• Fermentation of novel and underutilized agricultural food raw materials and side-streams to:
- produce nutrients, vitamins and high-value compounds and/or degrading antinutrients to improve micro- and macronutrient bioaccessibility
- disintegrate and liberate proteins and high-value chemicals aiding their extractability.
• Establishing molecular/ bioanalytical techniques to characterize food components and/or their reactions in raw material, bioprocesses and final food products
• Structuring of isolated plant-based fractions into healthy and tasty foods
• Hybrid food strategies to improve nutrition profile and bioavailability of new agricultural products

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you should have:
• Doctoral degree in a relevant field
• An outstanding publication record in food biotechnology.
• Pedagogical competencies and a proven track record of research-based teaching, including the creation and running of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
• Experience in supervising Bachelor, Master's and PhD students.
• A proven track record in attracting external funding.
• Excellent team and project management skills.
• Ability to develop collaborative research project ideas.
• A collaborative and innovative mindset.
• Successful track record in industry collaboration and an entrepreneurial mindset.
* Excellent interpersonal and communicative skills with excellent abilities to build long-term relations.

Meritorious if you have the following experiences:

• Management of major international collaborative research projects.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, we would like you to aquire sufficient knowledge to be able to communicate and teach in Swedish within a few years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Teaching faculty at Chalmers are required to have complered couses in higher education pedagogics in accordance with SUHF's recommendations (REK 2016:1) or equivalent education for a total of at least 10 weeks of full-time study. External applicants who currently do not meet the SUHF requirements may be employed for a permanent position under the condition that the required education is completed within the first two years of employment.
