We are now recruiting high calibre Associate Principal Scientist to join the in vivo metabolism bioscience team within Research and Early Development Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM). The position is placed at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.
CVRM is one of the three main therapeutic research areas within AstraZeneca which deliver candidate drugs into clinical development. CVRM Metabolism Bioscience department has a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. We are a team of professionals who are passionate about advancing science, to discover and develop novel therapeutics that will benefit patients suffering from diabetes, obesity, NASH, cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease.
What you'll do
This is a both lab-based and project leadership role where you will provide scientific leadership through developing and leading scientific and technical capabilities required for progressing drug discovery projects within the metabolic disease area. You will provide key experimental data supporting multi-disciplinary project teams in Cambridge, Gothenburg and Gaithersburg.
Responsibilities include:
You will be an expert in your area and play an active role in implementing and executing scientific research and development within the metabolism department, enabling the prosecution of a rapidly growing portfolio of small molecule and biologics drug projects.
* Be a "hands-on" expert and "lead from the bench" with in vivo models and methodologies with an enthusiasm for laboratory work and scientific curiosity
* Play a leading role in consolidating metabolic clamp techniques in conscious and anesthetized animals, including the use of radiolabeled isotopes to assess nutrient fluxes
* Responsibility for design, execution, analysis and communication of in vivo and ex vivo assays for profiling and mechanism of action.
* Support predominantly in vivo screening and mechanistic studies for small molecule, Oligonucleotides, novel peptide or antibody project targets through Target Validation, Lead Identification and Lead Optimisation.
* Proven expertise in building strong quantitative PK/PD reltaionships in vivo
* Ability to act as lead biologist and project leader for drug discovery projects.
* Support and mentor more junior staff less experienced in their roles.
Promote scientific debate within CVRM Research, playing a leading role in the selection and validation of new targets Act as a champion for novel approaches for drug discovery in metabolic disease area.
* Raise the scientific profile of CVRM both within AstraZeneca and externally through publication and presentations. Drive or participate in external collaborations
* Proactively inform and influence CVRM scientific strategy through expert knowledge of pathophysiology of metabolic diseases
* Foster an open and collaborative environment within CVRM Research.
Essential for the role
* PhD in life sciences with relevant >4 years post-doctoral experience or equivalent industry experience.
* Strong background in in vivo metabolic disease research areas with experience of diabetes , NASH, dyslipidemia or other liver diseases.
* Proven expertise in (micro)surgical procedures and cannulation in rodents
* Proven expertise and hands-on experience in metabolic clamp techniques in conscious and anesthetized animals, including the use of radiolabeled isotopes to assess nutrient fluxes
* Proven expertise and education in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics
* Execution of basic metabolism in vivo assays including GTTs, ITTs, and measurement food intake
* Significant experience in data analysis, interpretation and data quality control
* Strong interest in providing data for scientifically challenging work
* Capability to work seamlessly with cross-functional project teams to provide high quality data in a timely manner with strong organisational, time management and communication skills
* Evidence of scientific leadership and outlined expertise recognised by publication record in leading peer reviewed journals
* Enthusiastic to maintain a high external scientific profile through publication and conference presentations.
* Write, apply and adhere to ethical procedures enabling relevant in vivo models/studies
* Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
* Excellent English, both spoken and in writing
Desirable for the role
* Experience of working within drug discovery projects in pharmaceutical or biotech environment
* Significant experience of numerous in vitro and ex vivo cell-based technologies: qPCR, Western Blots, Elisa
