Pharmaceutical Sciences is a department within AstraZeneca Biopharmaceutical R&D. The Pharmaceutical Sciences' mission is to transform molecules into investigational medicines, meeting the unmet needs of future patients. Advanced Drug Delivery (ADD) is a department in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Our portfolio of projects spans traditional small molecules, peptides oligonucleotides to RNA based therapeutics across AstraZeneca's therapy areas and our mission is to transform diverse modalities into investigational medicines.
We now seek a talented, motivated formulation scientist at an Associate Principal Scientist level to join our Preformulation team in Gothenburg, Sweden. The remit of the team is to deliver small molecule support to projects up to CDID, where one compound is chosen to go further to clinical development.
What You'll do
This is an exciting role where you as a formulation scientist are anticipated to evaluate new compounds from a PhysChem perspective in order to provide pre-clinical formulations and formulation methods to a variety of projects. You will develop, write and approve methods for pre-clinical studies up to early safety studies and work as a part of different multi-skilled drug development project teams.
You are expected to act as mentor and train more junior staff regarding formulations. You will also drivescientific initiatives and technical improvement development within the department, and share the knowledge in and outside of our own function.In this role, you are expected to give expert supportto projects regarding formulation related issues, including stakeholder management and cross-functional presentations. You are expected to provide technical mechanistic understanding of choice of formulations.
The work is done in close collaboration with other formulation scientists, analytical chemists, solid state scientists as well as biopharmaceutics experts in Gothenburg, Sweden, but also with colleagues in UK and US. Extensive knowledge of the discovery and development phase as well as awareness of clinical drug development are central for being successful in this role.
Essential for the role
We are looking for candidates with
*
PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. Chemistry, Pharmaceutical technology, Surface & colloid chemistry) or equivalent industrial experience within pharmaceutical drug development
*
In-depth knowledge of formulation methods for small synthetic molecules, with focus on the liquid formulation aspects and enhanced formulations for poorly soluble molecules.
*
Extensive (5+ years) experience of industrial experience of working in projects.
*
Great ability to convincingly present scientific findings in writing, presentations and networking activities with ability to communicate and write proficiently in English.
*
Extensive practical laboratory experience of liquid formulation methods.
Additional capabilities desirable for the role

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, and the ability to discuss complex ideas in a simple, easy to understand way
*
Ability to tackle complex scientific problems and troubleshooting, and independently lead and influence projects
*
Profound knowledge of the discovery and development phase and awareness of clinical drug development.
