We are now looking to hire an Associate Principal Scientist, Synthetic Chemist, in the area of Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity, Innovative Medicines (RIA IMED).
As Associate Principal Scientist you will get the opportunity to join a highly collaborative discovery team leveraging innovative synthetic chemistry at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department to invent novel medicines. You will lead synthetic chemistry efforts in specific projects and manage internal and external resources. You will act as role model by leading the science from the bench through design, synthesis, purification and characterization of drug candidates from target validation to lead optimization phase. You will ensure uptake of scientific developments in the area of synthetic organic chemistry cross AstraZeneca Medicinal Chemistry teams and projects. You will influence compound design by highlighting opportunities created by the recent progress in synthetic chemistry. You will identify and lead collaborations and publication opportunities. You will also provide scientific mentoring and training of team members.
We are looking for you who have a strong scientific background with good skills in written and verbal communication and the ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem solving attitude and delivery focus.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
* Lead synthetic chemistry efforts in individual project teams at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department; this may also include managing external resources
* Actively impact the RIA Medicinal Chemistry projects to ensure that state of the art synthetic chemistry methodologies are being used to meet project objectives
* Mentor colleagues by providing expert advice and support in the interpretation of complex data
* Drive RIA IMED scientific reputation by identifying and progressing publication opportunities internally, across AZ and/or together with external partners
Essential Requirements
* PhD (or equivalent experience) in synthetic organic chemistry and preferably 3-4 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in drug discovery
* In-depth scientific knowledge in the area of modern synthetic chemistry proven by track record of publications and external presentations.
* Up-to-date with the application of modern analytical and computational techniques
* A proven track record of delivery from own experimental work
* Excellent communication and influencing skills
* Knowledge of the pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process
