The Arena
Discovery Science is a global function within Innovative Medicines, IM, in AstraZeneca. Discovery Science supports innovative medicine project teams from multifunctional capability centers in Alderley Park, Boston and Mölndal. Discovery Sciences is mainly involved in early lead generation through the late Lead optimization stage of drug discovery. It is composed of several capabilities where Transgenics is one among several others such as Reagent and Assay Development (RAD), Screening Sciences and Structure & Biophysics. This position will be placed in the RAD Department where we focus on delivering different types of reagents and assays for high impact into the drug development.
The Role
We are seeking a scientific and technical specialist in the Transgenic field. As a successful candidate you are experimentally focused, with strong troubleshooting skills, adept at putting ideas into practice and providing support/supervision and coaching to scientists.
The main tasks will be to design, generate and use transgenic animal and cell models, aligned with broad AstraZeneca R&D needs. You will be an authority in transgenic models and, from a lab-based perspective, make significant contributions to the practical delivery of project goals. Your key strengths will be in Bioinformatics analysis of genomes and application of this knowledge to the hands-on development of modified animal and cell models. You will support more junior scientists by advising and challenging them and also provide expert advice and interpretation of complex data and provide disciplinary scientific leadership and represent the department at interdisciplinary meetings both internally and externally.
Skills
Experience in devising strategies for genome modification for animal and cell model design, a strong genetics/Bio-Informatics background is essential together with an in-depth understanding and experience of cutting edge methodologies employed to modify mammalian genomes
Excellence and hands-on experience in cell and molecular biology methods
Adept at analysis of transgenic models, particularly in detection and quantitation of gene expression
State of the art understanding of the field, including transgenic organisms other than mice, and practical impact of new tools and emerging techniques such as meganuclease based precise genome editing.
Strong in cross-functional working and communication
