We are now looking to hire an Associate Principal Scientist with focus on Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry in the area of Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity within AstraZeneca 's Innovative Medicine Unit (RIA IMED).

Our Respiratory research is mainly carried out at the vibrant AstraZeneca Research site in Gothenburg, Sweden. However, collaboration is a way of life for us. Extensive collaboration with our AstraZeneca colleagues in Cambridge UK, the MedImmune research units in Gaithersburg and Cambridge, as well as numerous academic institutions and partners around the globe gives us access to a worldwide network of expertise and innovation.

Within our Medicinal Chemistry projects, you will act as role model by leading the science through design and synthesis of molecules both in lead generation or lead optimization phase. You will ensure uptake of novel scientific developments within synthetic organic chemistry into AstraZeneca 's Medicinal Chemistry teams and projects. You will have the opportunity to work with internal and external (CRO) resources and share findings by publishing or conference presentations.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong scientific background in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry with the ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem-solving attitude and delivery focus.



Major Duties and Responsibilities

* Design and synthesis of novel lead compounds
* Represent Medicinal Chemistry as chemistry lead in respiratory project teams
* Provide state-of-the-art Synthetic Organic Chemistry to projects at all stages of drug discovery delivering high quality tool compounds and drug molecules
* Apply synthetic chemistry with a parallel idea generation mindset, efficiently troubleshooting problems and maintaining a clear focus and impact on project progression
* Provide a significant level of expertise in Medicinal Chemistry to efficiently deliver high quality compounds within agreed timelines
* Drive RIA IMED 's scientific reputation by identifying and contributing to publication opportunities internally, across AZ and/or together with external partners



Essential Requirements

* PhD in synthetic Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry
* In-depth scientific knowledge of modern synthetic chemistry
* A proven track record of delivery from own experimental work
* Excellent influencing and collaboration skills
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Knowledge of the pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process
* Professional experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry
