Are you an Oligonucleotide Chemistry Expert hungry for implementing new ideas, innovative ways of working and continuous learning? Do you want to join a team with excellent scientists in an environment where absolutely everyone can thrive?

AstraZeneca is committed to the development of the next generation innovative respiratory medicines. The New Modalities Chemistry team in RIA leads the efforts focused on expanding the use of novel peptide and oligonucleotide based modalities and molecular conjugates in the treatment of respiratory diseases. The New Modalities team achieves this in close collaboration with scientists in the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Sciences departments - all joined by the goal to discover the respiratory medicines of the future.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

In this role, you will get the opportunity to provide expert knowledge within Oligonucleotide Chemistry. Depending on your seniority and previous experience, your role will be adjusted to match either Associate Principal Scientist or Principal Scientist level.

The New Modalities team consists of scientists focused on the discovery of peptide and oligonucleotide-based drugs. As an authority in the field, you will contribute with your expertise to specific RIA projects, including management of external resources and collaborations.

We expect you to lead from the bench, directly influencing the design of novel chemical entities by highlighting opportunities created by recent scientific progress. The role includes acting as a chemistry lead in projects and provide expert advice in the interpretation of complex data.

* Lead oligonucleotide-based chemistry efforts in project teams, which may also include managing external resources
* Actively impact the projects to ensure state of the art synthetic oligonucleotide chemistry methods and design approaches
* Proactively and visibly influence oligonucleotide drug discovery efforts in projects, role-modelled by own experimental work
* Drive scientific reputation by identifying and progressing publication opportunities internally, across AZ and together with external partners

Essential Requirements

Your excellent scientific background is complemented by strong written and oral communication skills. In addition, you engage and collaborate across boundaries with a proactive attitude and a clear delivery focus. Furthermore, we believe that you have excellent interpersonal skills necessary for working in a multidisciplinary environment and to mentor more junior colleagues.

* PhD in organic chemistry or bio chemistry
* Professional experience in a relevant field focused on oligonucleotide chemistry
* In-depth knowledge of recent developments in oligonucleotide chemistry
* Familiar with areas relevant to oligonucleotide based medicinal chemistry drug discovery
* Experience from pharmaceutical drug discovery of oligonucleotide drug candidates

Desirable Requirements

* Post-doctoral experience in relevant field

Respiratory is one of AstraZeneca's main therapy areas. Our aim is to transform asthma and COPD treatment through inhaled combinations at the core of care, biologics for the unmet needs of specific patient populations, and scientific advancements in disease modification.

From a research perspective we work to understand, treat, modify and ultimately cure respiratory disease with an emphasis on four diseases with significant unmet medical need; asthma, COPD, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Chronic Cough. Recently, we reshaped our strategic focus into three mechanistic and complimentary areas in chronic lung disease: Lung Immunity, Lung Epithelium and Lung Regeneration.

Our Respiratory research is mainly carried out at the dynamic AstraZeneca Research site in Gothenburg, Sweden. However, collaboration is a way of life for us. Extensive collaboration with our AstraZeneca colleagues in Cambridge UK, the MedImmune research units in Gaithersburg and Cambridge, as well as numerous academic institutions and partners around the globe gives us access to a worldwide network of expertise and innovation.

Our external collaborators expand both academic and biotech organisations including Imperial College London, Pieris, Bicycle Therapeutics, Ethris and many more. We seek to be flexible, responsive, open and honest and look for people, companies and investigators that share our collaborative spirit and high scientific standards.
