This is a rare opportunity that includes new collaborations with Human Longevity Inc, US the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, UK, and The Institute for Molecular Medicine, Finland. AstraZeneca will also establish an in-house Centre for Genomics Research which will develop a bespoke database comprising genome sequences from samples donated by patients in its clinical trials together with associated clinical and drug response data.
The Precise Genome Editing team is a creative group working on the development and applications of genome editing tools applied to drug discovery. We believe that embedding genomics across its research and development platforms will:
* deliver novel insights into the biology of diseases
* enable the identification of new targets for medicines
* support selection of patients for clinical trials
* allow patients to be matched with treatments more likely to benefit them

This role is a technical specialist in the Target validation area - a hands-on lab-based role at the forefront of the Genome Editing technology with a focus on effective delivery, troubleshooting and putting ideas into action. The Associate Principal Scientist provides support, supervision and mentorship to scientists, ensuring that methods run expertly and correctly, developing and guiding the set-up of new techniques.
The content and extent of this position will be adapted to suit your background and experience; therefore, we encourage Senior Scientists at all levels to apply for the role.
In this role, you will devise, champion and develop methods, tools and strategies for target validation in animal and cellular models. You will provide insights to disease biology by testing findings of AstraZeneca Integrated Genomics Initiative Program. Furthermore, you will develop and execute experimental plans to validate disease associated variants. As an authority in a particular scientific area, you will lead from a lab-based perspective to make significant hands on contributions in the delivery of project goals.
We will rely on you to:
* coach and support more junior scientists by advising and challenging them, but also by providing expert advice and interpretation of complex data.
* provide disciplinary scientific leadership and represent the department at interdisciplinary meetings internally as well as externally
* make a meaningful contribution to the practical delivery of projects in accordance with Safety Health & Environment requirements and in compliance with all AstraZeneca Corporate responsibility policies
* have a deep understanding of Innovative Medicines and how this science contributes to influence projects
* have an overall knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry in the global context and ability to translate this into new business opportunities.
* have a recognized scientific expertise within the area of the role and will function as a scientific expert within project teams
Essential Requirements
* Ph.D. degree or corresponding experience in a relevant scientific discipline
* Several years of relevant experience in drug discovery and/or early development or in a leading academic institution
* Expertise with integrative 'omics analysis (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics)
* Extensive hands on genome/base editing tools and functional genomics based on CRISPR and other custom designed nucleases
* Advanced understanding of genetic engineering in cell lines, primary cells or in vivo
* Expertise with Next Generation Sequencing analysis (including single cell sequencing) and expression analysis.
* Strong molecular biology skills including gDNA, PCR and RNA isolation and molecular cloning skills
* Proven understanding of statistics, quantitative data analysis, and data mining
* Familiarity with life sciences software and algorithms such as Spotfire, Blast, other sequence comparison methods in silico gene manipulation tools
* Novel publications and excellent oral and written communication skills and organizational skills
