Mission
AstraZeneca is committed to the development of the next generation innovative respiratory medicines. The Computational Chemistry team leads efforts to expand the use of state of the art in silico methods for modelling, ligand design, property predictions and data analysis supporting the RIA drug discovery projects with a focus on small to medium sized molecules. The team operates in a highly cross disciplinary environment in close collaboration with scientists from the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Science departments to advance the RIA project pipeline to advance the RIA project pipeline.
Job description
The Associate Director New Computational Chemistry leads an expert team of scientists providing state-of-the-art computational chemistry and cheminformatics input to RIA projects in all phases of drug discovery research. As an authority in the field the Associate Director is expected to make significant contributions to identify opportunities for the application of computational methods in drug discovery as well as providing expert advice on design strategies and interpretation of complex data supporting individual projects.
An important part of the role as Associate Director is to lead the strategy for continued build and implementation of in silico sciences at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
* Lead the application of Computational Chemistry methods in drug discovery, continuously develop the scientific basis in Computational Chemistry team to address future needs
* Present and inform internal stakeholders as well as the broader scientific community on scientific achievements
* Advise drug project teams, senior leaders, and mentor peers and more junior scientists on in silico based compound design and predictive approaches
* Initiate and lead collaborations with external scientific experts
* Manage performance reviews and salary setting of your direct reports
Education
* PhD in chemistry or corresponding experience in a relevant scientific discipline within drug discovery. Track-record of staff and scientific leadership applied to computational chemistry based drug discovery.
Requirements and Qualifications
* PhD in computational chemistry or corresponding experience from relevant field
* In-depth scientific experience and up-to-date knowledge of recent developments in the area of computational chemistry
* Experienced from the use and project application of modern predictive computational and predictive in silico tools applied to drug discovery
* Well up-to-date with recent developments in areas relevant to computational chemistry e.g. medicinal chemistry, structural chemistry, biophysical chemistry
Being a managerial position we think that the successful candidate has excellent interpersonal skills, is approachable, and has the ability to prioritise workload and manage challenging staff situations. Coaching and motivating team members in their scientific development is an important part of the role as is the ability to collaborate in cross functional teams. We also think the role requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. In addition, an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem solving attitude and delivery focus.
