You will join the Discovery Sciences organization, working within a vibrant scientific environment to support drug discovery. You will continue to develop and maintain a high level of scientific and operational knowledge, building on your specialist expertise in specific areas of BioMedical research. The Reagents and Assay Development (RAD) department of Discovery Sciences, is responsible for the generation of novel reagents and assays to support projects in all phases of the drug discovery pipeline, from target discovery all the way to clinical candidate.

We are seeking an Associate Director to lead one of our RAD Biochemical groups. As an Associate Director will lead a team of biochemical scientists whose remit is to use cutting edge technologies to deliver protein reagents and relevant assays according to the needs of each project. Their main focus will be on targets for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases (CVMD) and respiratory, inflammation and auto-immunity (RIA). Your skills will include the ability to maximize individual talents, create high-performing teams and develop trusting relationships with scientific colleagues. These colleagues will be on site, in the global AZ R&D network and external collaborations where you will use your excellent communication skills. You will make an active contribution to the development of the global RAD management function through leadership of multi-disciplinary initiatives that deliver value and impact to drug discovery projects.

As an Associate Director - Reagents and Assay Development (RAD) your main responsibilities will be:
Managing a team of biochemical scientists delivering sensitive and robust assays according to project time-lines across a number of Therapeutic Areas especially CVMD and RIA
Working across regions and skill groups within RAD and with other local and global functions within AstraZeneca
Advising others, including senior management, on project related issues such as progress, priorities and future strategies.
Ensuring own work, and the work of the team, is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. General Laboratory Standard (GLS)
Identification and implementation of new science, technologies and methods within the team.
Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of scientific and technical advances in the field of biochemical assay technologies
Maintaining high personal and team external scientific reputation in all aspects of biochemical assay technologies
Championing the implementation of new methodology and technology related to own area of expertise, including training and development of staff
Responsible for determining which new methodologies and technologies should be pursued, making decisions about how much resources to invest in them and contributing to this decision making process as a valued expert

Essential Requirements

Experience
A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific discipline with >5 years of experience in leading research teams (preferably in an industrial setting)
Expertise in biochemical assay development plus knowledge in one or more of the following areas:PreferableEnzyme kinetics and mechanism of action studies
Biochemical assay design including factorial experimental design
Experience in a range of assay technologies including FRET-based, absorbance, mass-spectrometry and antibody-based technologies.

DesirableKnowledge of protein science

A proven track record of delivery
People management, leadership, networking and communication skills
Management of risk using evaluative judgments in complicated or novel situations

Knowledge and Skills
A strong publication record
A strong global network to academic and industrial experts
An understanding of drug discovery and development
Excellent team working and networking skills with experience of interacting effectively across interfaces of discipline, culture, and expertise. Ability to think beyond the boundaries of your own job and discipline, challenge the status quo and actively seek new opportunities.
