hela Sverige Chalmers is a university of technology in which research and teaching are conducted on a broad front within technology, natural science and architecture. Currently there are approximately 11 000 students and 2400 employees at Chalmers.
The department for Chemical and biological engineering performs education and research for sustainable development, for improved health and quality of life. Our research covers widely within out field, ranging from natural science and bioscience, applied chemistry and biotechnology to chemical engineering. Our educational programs are characterized by technological solutions for improving peoples everyday life, and are continuously developed for meeting and pushing societal and industrial development.
Background
Polymer Technology at Chalmers has a long history of industrial co-operations, both polymer manufacturing companies as well as industrial end users. The research focus has mainly been on relations between the polymer structure and its resulting properties during both processing and as a final product. Some special competence areas are degradation and stabilization, surface modification and adhesion, crosslinking and flame retardants. This research is presently mostly focused on polyethylene for high voltage applications.
During more recent years the research has also been directed towards synthesizing conjugated polymers for different electronic and photonic applications.
To strengthen and develop the research in a long term, we offer one position as Assistant Professor in Polymer Technology at the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering.
Job description
The main focus of the position is the relation between the polymer structure and the resulting properties, with emphasis on synthetic polymers. Hence, the principal research area for the position is in the cross-section between polymer physics and polymer technology. The research area involves polymers for high voltage applications and polymer blends. Important competence fields are:
• characterization of the polymer structure, both on a molecular as well as on a supra molecular level
• general analyses of physical properties of polymers as well as morphology studies using several different techniques
Assistant Professor is a post that offers an opportunity to qualify for higher research positions, both in academia and in society at large. The appointment is for two + two years of full-time employment. An assistant professor is expected to reach the Swedish docent level (in Swedish "oavlönad docent") within the four years. After two years the progress is assessed.
This position consists of approximately 80 % research and 20% teaching. In teaching, the co-supervision of Ph.D. students is also included.
Qualifications
The applicant should have a Ph.D. degree (normally completed at most five years before the deadline for application) preferably in Polymer Technology or adjacent area and experience in the research field described above, plus some pedagogical experience. Experiences within the field of polyethylene and/or conjugated polymers are considered as a merit but not a demand.
Postdoctoral university experience or experience gained from qualified research in industry is highly valued.
Good knowledge in English is required and the applicant should be able to communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. The applicant is recommended to learn Swedish within a few years.
