The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Division
The work aims broadly to develop, apply and teach 21st Century pathway-based systems toxicology methods, bioinformatics, high throughput and high content data, hazard characterization and risk assessment tools for evaluating the safety of nanomaterials.

Duties
The successful applicant will conduct internationally competitive applied research in alternative methods, bioinformatics and systems toxicology within EU-funded projects dealing with nanomaterials safety. The work includes conducting "big data"-driven research in the nanotoxicology field, including data integration and analyses related to the Adverse Outcome Pathway concept. In vitro and in silico studies will be designed and developed with the aim to target both governmental bodies and industry needs for novel and cost-effective evaluation methods and tools. The position is also focused on teaching of alternative methods, human cell culture methods, bioinformatics, systems toxicology and risk assessment on both Master 's and PhD level.

The overarching goal will be to form animal-free systems toxicology-directed strategies to match new grouping, safe-by-design, control banding and hazard characterization approaches for nanomaterials, ultimately aiming towards an in vitro-only based risk assessment paradigm. The goal especially includes implementation of state-of-the-art aspects needed for the understanding of 21st Century risk assessment into the educational programs at IMM.

Entry requirements
The position requires a strong and broad background in biology (PhD) and nanotoxicology, and demonstrated expertise of integrative methods for bioinformatics analysis from a predictive translational perspective. The candidate must be able to and have extensive experience with in vitro experimental design, developing bioinformatics workflows to test research questions, and in applying them to predict toxicity of nanomaterials. Practical and theoretical knowledge in cell culturing and on a broad number of bioinformatics tools is a must. Experience in data management and curation in databases, with special reference to ISA-TAB methods, is required. Knowledge of IPR issues related to biomarker studies, tools development, and EU-funded task-leadership and collaborations is a further plus.

The position requires a strong pedagogical background with documented teaching skills at a level of PhD courses. Excellent knowledge of spoken and written scientific English as well as strong presentation skills are required.

A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant Professor if they have been awarded a Degree of Doctor or have achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period.

Bases of assessment
We stress scientific expertise, broad systems toxicology and translational experience in risk analysis, as well as pedagogical, communication and social skills, when assessing applicants.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet's qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system.

An Assistant Professor position is a fixed-term position. The first employment should be two years, with a possible extension of two years after evaluation.
