The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education is conducted in collaboration with other research groups from the Karolinska Institutet, with other universities as well as the Stockholm County Council.

Division

The Neuro division of CNS has a group of multiple sclerosis (MS) researchers with a research focus of understanding the pathogenesis, severity and progression of MS by integrating large-scale clinical information with molecular genetics, environmental/lifestyle data and registry data.

This work relies on intensive local, national and international collaborations.

Although clinical outcomes, including disease course, show increased concordance among relatives, little is known about the genetic and environmental contribution to severity and the mechanisms involved during MS progression. This is partly due to lack of well powered studies, limitations in measures of disease trajectories, omission of severity aspects other than motor function, and a lack of reliable biomarkers for disease progression. There are several ongoing projects that aims to fill these knowledge gaps one of them beingMultipleMS a CNS/KI coordinated EU/Horizon2020-funded consortium that aims to develop, validate and exploit methods for patient stratification in MS. MultipleMS will utilize uniquely large clinical cohorts with multiple data types, including genetic and lifestyle information, in combination with publically available multi-omics maps to identify biomarkers of the clinical course and the response to existing therapies, and to gain in-depth knowledge of distinct pathogenic pathways setting the stage for development of new interventions. Other projects are building on large biobanks collected within the EIMS, GEMS and IMSE studies that have collected genetic and lifestyle exposures on a large proportion of MS cases in Sweden. In this cohort we are currently exploring the use of alternative proxy measures of progression of MS based on linkages to national registries.

Duties

You will be responsible for developing measures of MS severity and progression, including disease trajectories and non-motor function-based severity scores, and for creating models that describe the disease course and other health parameters in MS. You will also collect, manage and quality assure genetic and phenotypic data, implement new measures and execute statistical and genetic analysis within the project.

Specific duties include:

- Manage genetic and phenotypic data.
- Integrating and quality assuring large-scale data sets and data from different national registers (e.g. Swedish MS Register, LISA, Patient Register, etc.).
- Survival analyses.
- Modeling disease and other health parameters.
- Develop measures for MS severity.
- Develop composite measures using longitudinal data that describe trajectory of MS disease course and progression.
- Develop statistical models that describe the disease course and other health parameters in MS.
- Carry out statistical analyses of clinical and environmental/lifestyle data.
- Carry out statistical genetic analyses for traits related to severity and progression of MS.
- Preparing and submitting grant applications and manuscripts for publication.
- Participate in teaching and supervision of students
