The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.
Research group
The position Assistant professor in Clinical Physiology with special emphasis on the regulation of skeletal muscle mass and function is available at the Division of Clinical Physiology, Department of Laboratory Medicine in Huddinge, in the Integrative Clinical Physiology research group led by Dr.
Thomas Gustafsson. Our research in clinical physiology aims to increase awareness of the link between physical activity and health, and the causes of impaired body function such as muscle wasting during inactivity, disease or aging. Our research spans from the whole-body level down to specific tissues and organs at the molecular level. Research is conducted in close collaboration with the Physiology Department at the Karolinska University Hospital. Traditional metabolic and physiological measurements are combined with molecular analysis (gene and protein expression, arrays, and bioinformatics) in different tissues as well as in primary cell cultures.
The research project
The overall cooperative research goal of this research environment is to increase the understanding of how aging and age-related diseases influence muscle mass and function, and then establish biomarkers and therapeutic targets that can help to identify and treat people with or at risk of muscle deconditioning. By combining cutting edge basic and clinical research, and through unique access to different patient cohorts suffering from muscle wasting, the project aims to:
- unravel the effects of systemic circulatory factors on processes and molecular pathways regulating muscle mass in aging and age-related disease
- explore how these pathways are affected by the interaction between disease, physical activity, nutrition and drugs
- explain the large heterogeneity in muscle loss and muscle building in response to illness and/or treatment strategies with the intention to identify high risk patients in the future
- implement a novel treatment strategy to combat muscle loss
Prerequisites and duties
Knowledge of molecular and cellular aspects of muscle regeneration and degeneration is essential; particularly expertise and direct appllication in cytokine/inflammatory signalling, vitamin D, NSAID, androgen signalling and effects on the muscle cell. Multi-task and prioritise a number of different projects particularly in ageing, endocrinology and sexual medicine - experience in these areas is desirable. Cell culture - extensive work in culture of human myoblasts and using MACS is essential with significant experience investigating effects on myoblast proliferation, fusion, quiescence, differentiation and apoptosis. Strong hands-on skills in immunological, molecular and biochemical methods including ELISA, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, microscopy, ChIP-seq, gene array, qRT-PCR, plasmids, siRNA transfection applied in skeletal muscle research (myoblast/tissue) is required. Participate in teaching of undergraduate/postgraduate courses with experience in teaching. Experience in supervision of undergraduate, Masters and PhD level students. Ability to be proactive and innovative; work independently as well as establish collaborations within KI and internationally, publish in peer-reviewed journals. Be responsible for the management and running of the cell and biochemical laboratories - previous experience is desirable.
Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period.
Other requirements
The candidate should have a good understanding of physiology and be highly motivated and passionate towards his/her projects. Previous experience in method development is essential and ability to interact with other research groups and core facilities is meritorious. A high level of English, spoken and written, is a requirement and documented pedagogical merits.
Bases of assessment
We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants.
Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet's qualifications portfolio (
http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio). The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.
An Assistant professor position is a fixed-term position. The first employment should be two years, with a possible extension of two years after evaluation.
