The Automation research group at the Division of Systems and Control is seeking a qualified candidate for the role of Assistant Professor in Automation. Our research group is internationally recognized, focusing on teaching and research across the broad domain of automation. We consider automation engineering a key enabler for developing methods and applications that leverage the digitalization of society, emphasizing social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

As Assistant Professor, you will be part of a dynamic group that offers a stimulating and flexible environment for expanding your teaching, research, and professional network within and beyond Chalmers.

To support your research activities, this position comes with funding for a PhD student for whom you will be the main supervisor, and also a postdoctoral researcher, enabling you to build and lead a strong research team from the start.

About the department

The Department of Electrical Engineering (E2) focuses on research and education in areas such as Systems and Control, Communication and Antenna Systems, Signal Processing and Biomedical Engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. Our expertise is applied wherever advanced technology integrates electronics and software. We address critical challenges for a sustainable future society, such as the growing demand for safety and security in a digital world.

The department offers a dynamic, international environment of around 250 employees from over 20 countries, and extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry, and society. Our department provides approximately 100 courses, many of which are part of Master's Programs in "Biomedical Engineering," "Electric Power Engineering," "Systems, Control and Mechatronics," and "Communication Engineering."

Main responsibilities

As an Assistant Professor within the Automation research group, your primary focus will be on cutting-edge research that aims to enhance advanced automation and autonomous systems that collaborate with humans for societal improvement. You will apply for funding and lead research initiatives in areas such as perception, planning, optimization, testing, and verification, producing high-impact scientific work publishable in renowned scientific journals, but also benefitting our industrial partners. Specifically, you will spearhead the Automation group's initiatives in scheduling and optimization using both traditional and data-driven approaches.

You will participate in teaching at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels and supervising PhD students. Your responsibilities will also include research administration, project management, communication, and planning, as well as securing external funding.

A key part of your role will be forming connections between industrial practice and the research community. You will engage with national and international partners, enhancing our collaborative research projects and meetings.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree: You must have a doctoral degree in Automation or a closely related discipline, with research and publications in high-impact journals within this field. Your degree should be obtained no more than seven years prior to the application deadline, with exceptions made for extended parental leave or military service*.

• Teaching experience: Demonstrable interest and potential to become a skilled educator are essential. A post-doctoral position at a different university than your doctoral institution is meritorious.

• Networking ability: You are expected to create and maintain a strong national and international network in Automation.

• Industrial experience: Practical and industrial experience with automation systems is an advantage.

• Research funding: You need to have experience of applying for research funding. To have demonstrated the ability to have research funding granted is meritorious.

• Language skills: Proficiency in English is required, and a keen interest to learn Swedish is meritorious. Chalmers offers Swedish language courses.

• The date of your doctoral degree certificate will be used to determine eligibility.

Contract terms
This is a four-year tenure-track position designed to support professional growth in research, teaching, and supervision. You will develop your ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, publish research, and enhance your pedagogical skills through both practical training and independent study. The goal is to qualify for promotion within four years, leading to a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.
