Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences
Department of Aquatic Science and Assessment, Uppsala
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (forskarassistent) in Climate Influence on landscape-scale surface water chemistry
SLU develops the understanding and sustainable use of biological natural resources. This is achieved through research, teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment and information extension.
SLU has 3 000 employees, 5 000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences is the largest of the four faculties of SLU. Our area of activity covers a wide range of disciplines, spanning over agriculture, food and biotechnology to natural resources, environment and landscape planning.
The 18 departments at the faculty are organised in four clusters. Most of the departments and the faculty office are located in Uppsala, 65 km north of Stockholm, but important activities are also carried out in Umeå, Skara, and Grimsö.

The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.ma.slu.se) has a unique national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to both water chemistry and the aquatic biota. This involves identifying human influence on aquatic ecosystems, as well as distinguishing those influences from natural variability. The mission is pursued through a comprehensive program of monitoring, research and development, as well as teaching. The breadth of expertise among the 90 members of the department (geochemical/biological, aquatic/terrestrial) combined with a strong international network, is an important strength. The department is located on SLU’s rural Ultuna campus, 15 minutes by bike from the medieval city of Uppsala, and just over an hour from Stockholm
Research area: The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment is pleased to announce a four-year Assistant Professor position on assessing landscape-scale climate influences on surface water chemistry The focus will be on using decades of observational data to define how changing precipitation and temperature regimes will influence landscape exports of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus from the mosaic of forests, peatlands and lakes that comprise Sweden’s boreo-nemoral landscape. This synthesis will be a contribution to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency funded Climate change and environmental objectives (CLEO).
Duties: The primary duty of an Assistant Professor at the Faculty is to develop the science within the subject area. An Assistant Professor will also be expected to contribute to the education of students at the faculty.
Eligibility: Applicants should hold a PhD degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate in biogeochemistry, aquatic sciences or the equivalent. Priority will be given to applicants who have been awarded their PhD degree at most five years before the last date for applications.
Assessment criteria: Particular emphasis will be placed on scientific qualifications within the subject area. Broad experience in surface water chemistry, the biogeochemistry and hydrology of the boreal forest landscape, and the dynamics of natural organic matter will be given special consideration in the evaluation of applications. A post-doc period is a merit. Experience in statistical analysis and upscaling of environmental data is also a merit.
