Umeå University - with its 29,000 students and over 4,000 employees – is an organisation in constant change and development. The university’s researchers carry out excellence within several areas of research, and many of them are among the world’s elite. We are one of Sweden’s largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes. Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here. We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.
Assistant Professor (forskarassistent) in Scientific Computing (beräkningsteknik)
The position is at the Department of Computing Science and is primarily focused on research. The appointment is initially for two years, beginning as soon as possible, and can normally be extended for another two years. We encourage engagement in teaching up to a level of 20%, which qualifies for an additional extension of the appointment up to a total of five years. Proficiency in either Swedish or English is required. The position aims to strengthen the department’s recently launched initiative in computational optimal design. This research area concerns the problem of determining the shape or the material composition of an object in order to satisfy a given set of requirements. The research area includes also a direction towards inverse problems. Projects within these areas are typically interdisciplinary and require a diverse competence: the ability to set up and analyze the mathematical model, a thorough knowledge in numerical methods for partial differential equations and large-scale numerical optimization, and the ability to realize the algorithms in robust and efficient software for high-performance computing systems. The candidate should possess a sufficiently deep background within these disciplines to enable a strong contribution to the development of the research area. Experience from relevant application areas is also highly valuable.
Candidates for this position should have a PhD degree or equivalent, not more than five years old. When evaluating the applicants, particular emphasis will be put on scientific skills. Pedagogical and administrative skills, and the ability to collaborate with other researchers and industry will also be considered in the evaluation.
The application can be submitted either electronically or in paper form and should contain the following items.
• A curriculum vitae,
• Copies of degree certificates,
• A statement of previous research achievements and teaching merits,
• A publication list,
• Reprints / copies of selected publications, numbered according to the publication list,
• A research plan (maximum 4 pages),
• A list of persons (with contact details) willing to provide oral or written recommendations.
