Architecture Consultant - Hadoop Architect, International Architecture COE

Role Description:
The Hadoop Architect for the International Architecture COE provides the architecture and technical expertise across the areas in the positioning and architecting of Hadoop "big data" solutions throughout the areas and countries within the international region. The scope of expertise required includes an expert knowledge of one or more Hadoop distributions, including Hortonworks, Cloudera, MapR or BigInsights, among others. Additional expertise on RDBMS based Data Warehouses, including Teradata, is preferred. Expertise in architecture frameworks, including working experience using Teradata's Reference Information Architecture (RIA) or equivalent, and an understanding of Teradata's Analytic Architecture Framework, or related frameworks such as TOGAF, is desired.
The Architecture Consultant is responsible for developing field capabilities at the Area and Country levels of the International Region. This includes defining best practices, architecture frameworks and architecture documentation artefacts, in addition to providing mentoring and education either side by side or in a classroom or conference setting.
The individual must have strong Architecture Consultant (or equivalent) experience in a related industry and have experience architecting and implementing Hadoop solutions covering Data Lakes, data engineering and data science tools and technologies. This position will work closely with Global organizations, including Offer Development, product management, engineering, and training to provide requirements, feedback and content to evolve the product capabilities and field expertise.

Responsibilities:
The role covers both pre-sales and delivery of "big data" projects. Responsibilities include:
• Engage with Teradata Account teams, customers and prospects to analyse and understand customer "big data" requirements
• Shape and influence customer requirements so that they are deployed in an optimum Hadoop architecture and with necessary integration into other technologies, like the Teradata integrated data warehouse and Aster discovery platform
• Assist in qualifying requirements and architectures, providing guidance to the area and country "big data" resources that will enable him / her to determine whether Hadoop is a good fit for the problem that the customer is trying to solve
• Contribute within the regional Big Data COE and partner with Think Big consulting
• Define best practices in the configuration and usage of the applicable Hadoop distribution of tools and associated products. Typically Hive, Pig, Falcon, Knox, Ranger, SQL and NOSQL databases, Giraph and other emerging tools and procedural programming languages such as Java or Python.
• Challenges standard approaches, coming up with innovative solution design recommendations

In order to be successful in this role, the Architecture Consultant:
• Is experienced in the Hadoop and "big data" space from both a strategic and a tactical perspective.
• Articulates and understands the relative value of Hadoop capabilities in terms of the competing and complementary tools and capabilities
• Understands how the capabilities of the emerging "big data" space address specific customer problems and issues. Has the ability to apply technical understanding to business issues.
• Has the ability to define an approach and prioritized plan that will effectively enable "big data" delivery through consulting services or assets
• Has a deep technical understanding of the available products in the "big data" space, their use cases and how they interact with each other.
• Provides thought leadership and technical or industry expertise to help apply and improve service and assets in the big data space.
• Stays abreast of current feature/function of Hadoop distributions, open source projects and software packages and best practices for optimization and integration with Teradata.
• Is Effective with multi-tasking and prioritizing needs. Self-motivated, driving to targeted dates and priorities.
• Has the ability to collaborate with multiple teams or individuals that may have different ideas and priorities.
• Possesses excellent verbal communication skills to discuss requirements, vision and action items with marketing, engineering, and the broader team of delivery professionals in the Field.
• Possesses excellent documentation skills to organize thoughts and ideas into documented and reusable assets

Role will include ~65-80% customer interaction requiring domain subject matter expertise and travel when necessary. Consulting and professional services experience for this role is an absolute pre-requisite, as is residing within an hour of a major airport

Education & Experience Requirements
• Team-oriented individual with excellent leadership, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
• High degree of initiative and the ability to work independently and follow-through on assignments
• Demonstrated experience in consulting and usage of best practice consulting tools and methodologies. Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Hands-on experience in the design, development or support of Hadoop in an implementation environment at a leading technology vendor or end-user computing organization
• 2+ years experience implementing ETL/ELT processes with MapReduce, PIG, Hive
• 2+ years hands on experience with HDFS, and NoSQL databases such as HBASE, Cassandra on large data sets
• 2+ years experience in application development using procedural languages such as; Shell, C, C++, C#, Java, Python, Perl, R.
• Demonstrate a keen interest in, and good understanding of, "big data" technology and the business trends that are driving the adoption of this technology;
• Demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills; particularly those that apply to a "big data" environment
• Maintain a good level of understanding about the Hadoop technology marketplace
• Knowledge of Teradata's Unified Data Architecture (UDA)
• Strong understanding of data structures, modelling and data warehousing design principles
• BS or MS degree in Computer Science or relevant fields
