Description of directorate/division
The Detector Group is responsible for managing the delivery, installation, commissioning and long term operation of detector systems for the neutron instruments at ESS.
The Services Section comprises the engineers, technicians and workshop assistants, as well as helping the smooth administrative running of the detector group as a whole. This section ensures the delivery of well-engineered prototypes as well as final detectors for ESS instruments.
Description of main responsibilities
This position will be responsible for line managing this section (of about 10 people), giving guidance and hands-on help to the projects, planning the work and ensuring that it is aligned with the planning of the other sections.
This is a senior role in the Detector Group. This position will also help the Group Leader and fellow section leaders in the day-to-day running and strategic direction of the group. Mentoring and developing of new talent is expected.
As ESS is a mainly in-kind project, there will be a lot of interaction with partners to enable successful delivery of detectors in an open, collaborative and transparent fashion. This in turn implies a degree of informal supervision of collaborative partners.
There will be extensive administrative aspects to this position to enable the smooth running of the group and the projects, including processing the purchase requests for the Detector Group, reviewing invoices, dealing with other administrative departments of the ESS, logistics for events and for travelling, induction new Detector Group members, etc. This position will also monitor the status of grants that the detector group is involved in, and ensure the sucsessful delivery of those commitments.
Qualifications
This position is primarily a line, project and grant management role. The candidate should be well-rounded with an interest in delivering results and playing a key role in contributing to the success of detectors for ESS instruments.
The ideal candidate will have a calm can-do problem solving attitude, focussed on delivery, quality and results. They must take responsibility for solving problems arising. The ability to work both independently and in groups is needed. The candidate should be able to install a team atmosphere amongst colleagues. The ability to work well under schedule pressure in a complex environment is needed. Confidentiality and excellent people skills, soft skills and problem solving ability are expected.
A good grasp of common IT tools and ability to use IT interfaces is required, as well as administrative competence.
Demonstratable experience in formulating short and medium term strategy and in carrying it out would be a distinct advantage.
This position requires excellent communication skills (conversation, presentation and writing levels) in English. The candidate should be capable of succinctly summarising complex information either verbally or in written form. The working language will be English. Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage.
Previous line or project management (formal or informal) is desired. Experience of informal management of collaborative groups (through e.g. experimental collaboration, grants, in-kind arrangements, etc) is an advantage. Experience of supervision (formal or informal) and mentoring of more junior people is helpful.
