The Technical Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden invites applications for an Accelerator Scientist in the Accelerator Division

The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator, in collaboration with partner institutions and other divisions of the ESS. The candidate will join a vibrant and multi-cultural beam physics section within the ESS Accelerator Division.

Job description
The work will focus on the challenging aspects of the beam physics of the accelerator, including simulations and taking part in the exciting beam commissioning of the ESS linac.During the period of commissioning the candidate is expected to:

• Performe simulations and beam dynamics studies for the commissioning phase, including behavior of the space charge dominanent beam under off-nominal condutions possible during commissioning and operations
• Take part in the commissioning studies and machine setup
• Perform analysis on the data taken during commissioning

During the steady operation of the accelerator, the candidate is also expected to:

• Participate in machine development shift, in order to bring the linac to a full 5MW operation.
• In the future, overview the machine tuning, train and give expert support to the Operations Team.

In the first two years, this position focuses on tasks related to the licensing of the linac, e.g. radiation hazard analysis of the accelerator.

From the candidate, regular presentations and documentations of the work carried out will be necessary, in collaboration with specialists from a wide range of disciplines.

Qualifications
To be a successful candidate the applicant is required to have:

• Doctoral degree in physics or related area or equivalent experience, with at least 5 years of experience after the PhD.
• Good knowledge of the accelerator physics, preferably, beam dynamics of hadron linacs with experience in producing succinct documents.
• Excellent capabilities to perform research shall be demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or at conferences in the accelerator domain.
• Solid knowledge of particle tracking and beam optics codes and commissioning experience are an advantage.
• Knowledge in programming languages (Python, Java, etc) and programing of GUIs/scripts for data acquisition or machine control will have a positive impact.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in academic research, an interest to collaborate and exchange knowledge and who is good in documenting the work. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required, as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team. To be successful in this position the candidate must be able to interact well with others and to work in a balanced way even when demands are high.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period
