The QoG Institute was founded in 2004 by Professor Bo Rothstein and Professor Sören Holmberg and is an independent research institute within the Department of Political Science. The QoG institute consists of about thirty researchers who conduct and promote research on the causes, consequences and nature of Good Governance and the Quality of Government (QoG) - that is, trustworthy, reliable, impartial, uncorrupted and competent government institutions. A special focus is put on the performance of democracies when it comes to increasing overall human wellbeing, control corruption and have sustainable public finances. While Quality of Government is our common intellectual focal point, researchers within the Institute apply a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives. The main objective of the Institute is to address the theoretical and empirical problem of how political institutions of high quality can be defined, created and maintained. A second objective is to study the effects of Quality of Government on a number of policy areas, such as population health, political legitimacy, development, social policy, and poverty. The present positions are funded by a personal grant from the Wallenberg Foundation (a Wallenberg Scholars Grant) to Professor Bo Rothstein. More information can be found at
www.qog.pol.gu.se and also in the "Ten Year Report" from the QoG Institute published in 2015 that can be downloaded from the website.
The admitted students are thus supposed to write their doctoral thesis within the QoG research programme and they will participate in the programme's activities. The working language at the QoG Institute is English.
The aim of the doctoral programme is for students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to conduct research autonomously within political science and to contribute to the development of knowledge within the discipline with a doctoral thesis. Another aim is for doctoral students to develop an ability to later apply the acquired knowledge and skills within post-degree research or other professional work.
Admission to the doctoral programme at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, comes with a 4-year salaried position on a fulltime, residential basis, with the possibility of extension for a fifth year if the student completes a minimum of 20 percent teaching/other duties during the first four years. Students get office space, computer, and office phone and access to all standard services in the department.
To be eligible for the position, the applicant must meet both general and specific entry requirements. An applicant meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle (PhD) studies if he/she has obtained (Higher Education Ordinance Ch.7, Sec.39):
1. a degree at the second-cycle level (MA-level or equivalent),
2. at least 240 higher education (university) credits, of which at least 60 must be at the second-cycle level, or
3. largely equivalent knowledge in other ways in Sweden or abroad. In Sweden, 240 university credits equals four years of completed full-time studies.
An applicant meets the specific entry requirements for doctoral (PhD) studies if he/she has at least 60 university credits in political science or has equivalent qualifications.
Applicants who have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad will also be considered to meet the specific entry requirements. (60 university credits correspond to one year of completed full-time studies.) For more information see the doctoral programme's general syllabus:
http://pol.gu.se/english/education/ph.d.-programmeFinally, although not a formal requirement, we encourage successful applicants to acquire sufficient competency in the Swedish language to be able to actively participate in seminars and other activities at the Department, within a two-year period.
The Department of Political Science is an open and engaged department, in the middle of the city and at the centre of the debate. The Department has about 140 employees, with more than 80 researchers, teachers and doctoral (PhD) students. The research at the Department focus on central areas of political science, such as voters and elections, political institutions, environmental politics and international politics, European politics, environmental politics and political ideas. Research programmes and collaboration projects at the Department include the Swedish National Election Studies Programme, Quality of Government Institute (QoG), Multidisciplinary Research on Democracy (MOD), Centre for Collective Action Research (CeCAR), Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Governance and Local Development at Gothenburg (GLD-G) and the Centre for European Research (CERGU).
