Department of Ecology
We are looking for a post doc to a project about climate change, conservation strategies and forest pest control. The post doc will obtain a 2-year stipend from Carl Tryggers Foundation. The post doc will be a part of a strong international research environment where both basic and applied research is conducted (see https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Thomas_Ranius2/projects och https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Erik_Oeckinger/projects).

At the Department of Ecology in Uppsala, we conduct research for sustainable forest and agricultural production and efficient biological conservation. We study the influence of land use and climate on animals, plants, soils nutrient status, and greenhouse gas balances. Solutions are sought that will mitigate climate change, preserve threatened species, benefit biological diversity and ecosystem services, and control pests in forest and agricultural landscapes as well as in urban areas. See also: http://www.ekol.slu.se/ShowPage.cfm?OrgenhetSida_ID=9090.

Tasks:
Climate change will have vast effects on biodiversity and pest management. So far most analyses of these effects have been at a coarse-grained scale, but recently it has been shown that the fine-grained climatic heterogeneity is important. We will collect new field data including both local and regional climatic gradients by surveys of one species of conservation concern (a Cerambycid beetle Tragosoma depsarium) and experiments on an important pest species (spruce bark beetle Ips typographus). You will use the data to assess how forest insect species are affected by climate by modelling abundances with climate and habitat variables and their interactions at multiple spatial scales. You can use the obtained models to predict the amount of available habitat given different climate scenarios.

Merits:
The applicant should hold a Ph D in ecology (or in a similar relevant subject, such as forest science or entomology), preferably achieved within the last three years. Previous work in conservation biology or population ecology are meriting, as are experience of field studies of insects, forests, GIS and statistical modelling. A strong publication record (in relation to the time since dissertation) is a merit. Strong communication skills in English (both written and oral) are required. The candidate is expected to be capable and willing to take initiative and work independently as well as in a team. Field work will take place in multiple locations in Sweden, and a driving license is therefore required. We put large weight to personal characteristics

The application must contain: (i) a summary of the research experience, expectations on this position and future plans (max 1 page) (2) CV, and (3) two reference persons.

Location:
Uppsala.

Employment:
24 months stipedend given from Carl Tryggers Stiftelse.

Access:
Upon agreement.

Application:
Welcome with your application via the application button below no later than the April 06th 2019.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of SEK 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
