Linnaeus University seeks
2 PhD Students in Marine Ecology, specialization Phytoplankton Ecology
Linnaeus University has 25 000 students and 2 000 employees. As a Ph.D. student at the Linnaeus University you will find yourself interacting with colleagues in a very stimulating environment where curiosity, new-thinking and practical use are incentivated. For more information see: Lnu.se
The School of Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Marine Ecology, Mathematics, Microbiology, and Physics.
The phytoplankton research group seeks two PhD students for studies within the context of climatic induced changes and harmful algal blooms occurrence and expansion.
Project titles:
1) The role of climatic induced changes on the expansion of the fish-killer microalgae Prymnesium species
2) Cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea now and at the end of the century- the role of climate.
The research project : The projects aim to understand how climate induced changes and eutrophication are interacting and favoring the expansion and occurrence of the blooms of toxic algal species in the Baltic Sea. Project nr 1 also aims to determine the optimum conditions for aquaculture placement, with the lowest risk for blooms of fish killers to occur. The projects are a combination of laboratory and mesocosm experiments and fieldwork. The work will be mostly done with Baltic Sea waters, but comparison studies might be performed in other countries. You are going to be working with advanced instruments as e.g. flow cytometers, real-time-PCR, etc. For more details on the group check: http://www.bom.hik.se/ngred , http://www.bom.hik.se/plankton
Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) in marine ecology or limnology for the present project. Documented training and experience of working with microalgae in cultures and in situ is an advantage, as well as, knowledge in microalgae cell physiology and good chemistry background. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.
The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will lead to a PhD in Marine Ecology.
The starting point for the PhD education is flexible and may be negotiated.
