hela Sverige Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.9 billion per year. We currently have 1,840 employees and 17,670 students.
In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.Electric Power Engineering in Skellefteå, Sweden, is a successful group at Luleå University of Technology led by Professor Math Bollen.
The current research directions for the group are hosting capacity, smart grid solutions, and power quality. The group has a good national and international reputation for its leading research.
The group currently consists of a chaired professor, two more professors, four other senior researchers, one research engineer and 18 doctoral students.
We are recruiting two doctoral students within a project regarding the calculation of transmission-system hosting capacity with and without new technology. The project is funded by Kempe Foundations, Svenska kraftnät, Centre for Hydrogen Energy Systems Sweden (CH2ESS), and the Swedish Energy Agency.

Project description
This project contributes to a broad understanding (among different stakeholders) of insufficient transmission capacity in transmission systems, of opportunities with new technology and methods (smart grid solutions) to increase transmission capacity, as well as of limitations with such smart solutions. From the scientific side, the aim is to gain more knowledge about the possibilities and limitations of smart grids as well as about methods to estimate transmission capacity (hosting capacity).
The method for quantifying the hosting capacity will address three different solutions (dynamic component rating; demand-side flexibility; and risk-based approaches to transmission system operation).
The main activities within the project concern research related to (smart) electricity grids and dissemination of results to other researchers is an important part of the project. However, the project is unique in that results will be disseminated to non-scientific stakeholders as well. The network operators should know about opportunities with smart grids, while some other stakeholders (municipalities, wind power operators, industrial customers, landowners, etc.) should know about the limitations of existing and smart grids.
The project is part of the Centre for Hydrogen Energy Systems Sweden (CH2ESS). CH2ESS is a research and knowledge initiative at Luleå University of Technology with a focus on hydrogen use in industrial processes and energy systems, in close collaboration with Swedish industry. For more information on CH2ESS visit our website.
Duties
The project will be conducted by a PhD student, together with supervisors and technical support personnel.
The doctoral program will result in a PhD degree after the equivalent of four years of full-time graduate studies. Departmental duties of up to 20 % of full-time (usually in the form of teaching and administrative work) will be included in the duties in addition to the graduate program.
You will be part of a network of researchers within Hydrogen as part of CH2ESS.
Qualifications
You are qualified to apply for this position if you have an MSc or equivalent technical degree with specialization appropriate for research in electrical power engineering such as electrical engineering, electronics, energy, engineering physics or similar areas. Alternatively, an individual fulfills the general eligibility requirements for the third-cycle educational program when he or she 1) has completed a second-cycle degree, 2) has completed higher education courses worth at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 are for second-cycle courses, or 3) in some other manner, in this country or abroad, has acquired the equivalent qualifications courses in electrical engineering.
Advanced knowledge of written and spoken English is required.
Previous experience in design of electricity markets and/or in stochastic methods applied to electric power systems, is considered an important merit.
In addition, ability to contribute to the education done by the group (to a large part done in Swedish) is regarded meriting.
