The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at ki.se/meb

Research Group

The Cancer Genomics group at MEB is headed by professor Henrik Grönberg and has a translational focus, with the goal to pursue clinically relevant research questions.

The group is currently conducting large studies in prostate cancer where genomic profiling is used to address tumor grading, prognostication at diagnosis and optimizing treatment in the metastatic setting. The research group is currently responsible for targeted sequencing in a clinical trial, where the tumor profile is used for randomization of colorectal cancer patients. During Q3 2018, a prospective trial will start, using circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) for randomization of metastatic prostate cancer patients. The Cancer Genomics group is part of a larger research environment with 20-25 persons focused on different aspects of prostate cancer.

Duties

The candidate postdoc will work within a core team consisting of three lab engineers, two currently employed bioinformaticians and one cancer researcher (Johan Lindberg) with a supervisory role. The postdoc is expected to take responsibility and head individual research projects. The research group has developed a ctDNA profile. Although the profile provides clinically relevant information for the majority of prostate cancer patients it is currently not know if complementing the ctDNA profile with circulating tumor cells (CTCs) or cell-free RNA (cfRNA) analysis may increase quality of the liquid biopsy. The postdoc will start by establishing a cost-efficient approach to perform CTC profiling which will subsequently be tested prospectively in parallel with ctDNA analysis. Although DNA-based profiling of CTCs will initially be prioritized, single-cell RNA sequencing will also be explored. Careful planning of experiments and large-scale analysis of sequencing data are cornerstones of these projects.

Although the postdoc initially will focus on liquid biopsies, initiatives are encouraged to explore new avenues. The postdoc is also expected to author scientific articles.

Bases of assessment

Experience from cancer genomics, encompassing both lab-work and informatics is an advantage. Co-authorship in projects utilizing liquid biopsies that have resulted in published peer-reviewed scientific articles also qualifying. Experience from working with statistical analysis software, such as R, is required.

The current analysis infrastructure is written in Python and is utilizing both in-house developed- and publically available bioinformatics tools. Although the postdoc is not required to actively contribute to the analysis infrastructure, experience from working in a Linux/Unix environment is meritorious.

To be successful, the postdoc have to have the ability to work independently, to cooperate, to be ambitions and to take initiatives.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

A person is eligible if he or she has performed the PhD defense before 20180831 in a relevant subject area. The postdoc is expected to start 20180901.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

- A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
- A complete list of publications
- A summary of current work (no more than one page)
- Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.

The position is 1 year with a prolonging of 1+2 years after evaluation.
