The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at ki.se/meb

Description of research group and project

Our pediatric epidemiology research group studies genetic and environmental risk factors for development of asthma, allergies and other common childhood disorders.

Causes and consequences of early life risk factors as well as co-morbidity between asthma and other diseases are investigated in large population-based studies. Unique resources and prerequisites at the department - such as the Swedish Twin Registry, large prospective studies, record linkage capabilities and access to clinical data as well as biological material - are effectively explored.

Duties and responsibilites:

Two post-doc positions in pediatric epidemiology are available, with focus on studies on risks and consequences of common childhood disorders. Large, population-based cohorts and linkages between the national health registers and the Swedish Twin Registry will be used along with appropriate measures of health and environment and study designs that account for familial confounding (within twin/sibling/cousin and longitudinal within-individual comparisons). Active participation in two large twin projects exploring growth parameters, genetic and epigenetic determinants for asthma comprises a central component of the research.

The post-doctoral fellows will be involved in all parts of the projects, ranging from generating own research ideas and supervision of students, to day-to-day data management and statistical analysis.

Preparation of publications for submission to peer-reviewed journals will be central activities.

Methodological advances will be disseminated via networks such as the Swedish Initiative for Microdata in the Social and Medical sciences www.simsam.nu, the Strategic Research Area in Epidemiology (SfoEpi) and graduate schools such as SINGS, with the purpose to provide synergies to the entire Swedish research community.

Skills and personal qualities

The applicant should have a background in medicine. It is required that he/she has previous experience in biostatistical analyses and epidemiological methods. Experience in register-based research is a merit. Fluency in written and spoken Swedish and English is required since data collection will be administered independently and the group is part of an international research environment.

Personal skills such as being structured and have good organisation- and initiative talents are meriting.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

- A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
- A complete list of publications
- A summary of current work (no more than one page)
- Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
- Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.

The length of the positions is 1 year, with a possible prolonging after evaluation.
