RNA Biology: Functional studies of microRNAs and small interfering RNAs during growth and development
The aim of this project is to reveal the function of small RNAs, i.e. microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering (siRNAs) and their associated proteins during growth and development. The genetic tractable social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum is used as a model for these studies. Dictyostelium is a well-established model organism for studies of different developmental features. It is also of interest from an evolutionary perspective, branching out after plants but before the animal/fungi lineages and positioned in the interface between uni- and multicellularity.
By high-throughput sequencing, we have recently identified a large number of small RNAs in Dictyostelium. Importantly, the analysis revealed many miRNAs in this amoeba being one of just a few single-cell organisms where miRNAs have been identified. We have also identified several proteins involved in biogenesis of small RNAs.
We are now entering the next exciting phase to understand the function of small RNAs during growth and development. A number of different biochemical, molecular-, and cell biological tools will be used in order to, e.g. construct knock-out strains, identify new genes involved in mi/siRNA function, and study protein localization using fluorescent labeled proteins. High-throughput sequencing will also be used in order to pin-point the targets for the small RNAs.
You will be part of a Linnaeus/Swedish Research Council supported center of excellence; URRC - Uppsala RNA Research Center, where 14 research groups from Uppsala University and SLU, placed at the Biomedical Center (BMC), study different aspects of RNA biology. You will also take part in international collaborations. The application must include a letter of interest (1 page maximum), CV, copies of publications such as exam/master work, and names and contact information of at least two references (previous employers, teachers, or supervisors).

A person has basic eligibility for third level education if he or she has taken a second level qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second level.
