Department of energy and technology
Climate effects of forest-based products - in cooperation with Stora Enso

We are looking for a PhD student that will work with calculating and analysing climate effects of forest-based products from a life cycle perspective. The position is up to five years of employment where a certain part will be carried out at Stora Enso as a trainee.

Forest biomass is a renewable raw material that can be used for a large and growing number of products central to the future bioeconomy. In addition to the potential for trees to bind carbon from the atmosphere, wood products can replace greenhouse gas intensive materials and fossil fuels. At the same time, the forest value chain requires energy and natural resources for its function.

Environmental impacts, and especially climate impact, has become an increasingly important factor in planning a sustainable society. It is therefore crucial that the climate impact can be quantified as accurately as possible, so that the most sustainable system can be prioritized for continued development. Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology is continuously evolving and central for calculating climate effects from a system perspective.

The Department of energy and technology, at the soil, water and environment (MVM) centre, offers a stimulating and interdisciplinary research environment with both national and international focus. Involved supervisors have extensive experience in doctoral supervision and the department has a well-functioning structure for the education.

The doctoral project is part of a larger interdisciplinary collaboration project between SLU and Stora Enso. The collaboration will comprise about 5 doctoral students and several researchers who will have joint activities. They will also gain good insight into the work of an international company working with the entire value chain from forest production to finished bio-based product.

Duties:
The aim of the PhD student position is a doctoral degree. The research area for the PhD studies includes quantification of environmental effects of systems for producing bio-based materials and energy. The postgraduate education will be coordinated with trainee activities within Stora Enso, and is planned to comprise about 5 years of employment.

Qualifications:
Forester, Agronomist, MSc in Engineering or equivalent. Knowledge in forest production, bio-based products and energy, life cycle assessment (LCA) and modelling is meriting, but we believe that you can retrieve knowledge in one of these areas if you do not have it from the start. Great emphasis is placed on personal attributes, such as an ability to work both in teams and independently, and analytical and problem-solving skills.

Forms for funding or employment:
Employment 4 years as PhD student.

Starting date:
Upon agreement.

Application:
We welcome your application no later than 2020-01-08.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or
