Department of Ecology in Uppsala
1 PhD student in the research education subject: Ecology
The effects of agricultural intensification on food-web interactions and biological pest control
Biological control of crop pests by natural enemies is an ecosystem service of large economic value that is threatened by agricultural intensification. We know that complex landscapes with a high proportion of non-crop habitats often harbour higher abundances and diversity of arthropod natural enemies compared to more intensively managed landscapes, and that local management can also have large impacts on natural enemies. However, the relationship between land-use, biodiversity and biological control is far from straight forward. To further our mechanistic understanding of these relationships we need a better knowledge of food-web interactions. This PhD-study aims to investigate how agricultural intensification affects food-web interactions and biological control of cereal aphids. The student will compare arthropod food webs in cereal crops with different levels of local and/or landscape level agricultural intensification. Molecular gut content analyses will be used to investigate the strength of trophic interactions among different taxa associated with cereal aphids. Analyses will include, e.g. how levels of intra-guild and alternative prey predation are affected by land-use and how this impacts on biological control of cereal aphids. The student will also have the opportunity to conduct manipulative field cage or laboratory studies to test hypotheses derived from the food-web analyses. The results of this work are expected to improve our mechanistic understanding of how land-use and biodiversity affects biological control and will help us find means of improving biocontrol efficacy.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a degree in biology, agronomy or similar subjects with emphasis on ecology. Advanced level knowledge in some of the subjects community ecology, insect ecology and molecular ecology are qualifying. Also, skills in planning and statistically analyzing experiments as well as experience of ecological field work and molecular lab work will be of merit. The applicant should have the ability to work both independently and in a team, and to communicate well in written and spoken English. Driving license is necessary.
