We are seeking a PhD student in environmental assessment with a strong background in ecotoxicology and/or environmental sciences. The PhD thesis is part of a Joint Project Initiative involving partners from Norway, the Netherlands, Spain and Canada and will be co-supervised by colleagues from both SLU and VU Amsterdam. This international research team is interested in understanding the environmental consequences of microplastics (MPs) applied with sewage sludge, which serves as fertilizer, to agricultural ecosystems. The PhD candidate will contribute to project goals by performing fate and effect studies under controlled field and laboratory conditions in Sweden and with our project partners in the Netherlands and Spain. This research will contribute to a fundamentally important understanding of MP properties and the environmental conditions driving their loss from agricultural fields to adjacent surface water bodies via runoff as well as potential consequences for soil ecosystem health. These data will serve as input parameters for a model predicting MP fate, which will be validated by means of field studies performed in Sweden, Spain and Canada. Additionally, effects in terrestrial model ecosystems will be assessed, which will require a longer visit at our project partnersorsquo; laboratory at VU Amsterdam. The project is funded by a grant from the Swedish research council Formas in cooperation with the European Union JPI oldquo;Water challenges for a changing worldordquo;.
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/en/departments/aquatic-sciences-assessment) is a competence centre for applied environmental sciences with focus on environmental assessment in terrestrial and surface water ecosystems. The research focuses on biogeochemical and hydrological processes in catchments, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, as well as aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. The department has about 100 employees, of which half are researchers and PhD students and the other half are laboratory, technical and administrative staff.
Kvalifikationer: Applicants shall hold a MSc in environmental sciences, ecotoxicology or related fields. Ideally, the candidate should be familiar with concepts and theories in one or more of: ecotoxicology, catchment science and environmental chemistry. Experience with laboratory experiments, data handling and analyses is expected. Additionally, applicants shall hold a valid driver?s license and have some the ability to work for several months in another EU-member state. Speaking Spanish is an asset, while English is working language. Emphasis is placed on personal characteristics such as interpersonal skills, analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently. Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) is required.
The position is full-time and will be granted for a period of four years.
