Governing urban transformations: Smart cycling futures
The European renaissance in cycling that has occurred in recent decades is increasingly portrayed as being central to addressing a variety of apparently complex urban challenges, including: the decarbonisation of mobility systems, tackling rising obesity levels, and promoting urban liveability. The application of smart technologies is expected to further enhance the benefits of cycling and widen its appeal and accessibility. Electric bicycles, for example, are predicted to result in more and longer journeys being made by bicycle, while smart infrastructure (e.g. responsive traffic lights) and smart phone apps make transport by bicycle more convenient, faster and safer. For these reasons, smart cycling has acquired an increasingly prominent position in discourses on sustainable urban futures.

This PhD project will investigate how smart technologies are shaping the future of urban cycling. It will analyse emerging understandings, of and knowledge about, smart cycling; urban planning policies and material interventions in cycling infrastructure; and, cycling cultures and practices. The research aims to provide novel insights on governance for urban transformations by extending theorisations of sustainability transitions beyond innovation-centred transition management thinking. The successful applicant will determine the exact research design based on their particular interests and skills, but there are excellent opportunities for undertaking comparative research, including extended visits to other European universities, as part of the project.

The post will be based at the Ultuna Campus of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), in Uppsala, Sweden. The project is embedded in the o#39;Urban Futureso#39; strategic research platform at SLU and the Department of Urban and Rural Development. The successful candidate will be supervised jointly by Dr Matthew Cashmore (SLU) and Dr Johannes Stripple (Department of Political Science, Lund University).

Kvalifikationer: We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual, with an academic background in
planning, landscape architecture, environmental politics, human geography or other relevant fields of the social sciences. Some knowledge of transition studies and science and technology studies is desirable, but not essential. The candidate should be fluent in spoken and written English.
