Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in riparian-stream networks
We are seeking a PhD student to work in environmental assessment with a strong background in stream ecology and/or limnology. The PhD thesis is part of a European BiodivERsA project oldquo;CROSSLINK: Understanding cross-habitat linkages between blue and green infrastructure to optimize management of biodiversity, ecosystem services and multiple human usesordquo; (http://www.slu.se/Biodiversa_Crosslink). This research team is interested in understanding how land use effects the biodiversity and functioning of streams and riparian habitats, with special focus on the role of riparian buffer strips in maintaining cross-habitat linkages from aquatic to terrestrial systems, and outcomes for biodiversity and ecosystem functioning at both local and larger (stream network) scales. Field and laboratory experiments will be used to study trophic-transfer pathways between streams and adjacent riparian habitats, the mechanisms underlying subsidy effects on terrestrial biodiversity and functioning and how riparian buffer strips mitigate land use effects on cross-ecosystem connectivity. Modelling will be used assess land-use impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and services of stream-riparian networks and the value of riparian buffers in mitigating anthropogenic impacts.

The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/en/departments/aquatic-sciences-assessment) is a competence centre for applied environmental sciences with focus on environmental assessment in surface water and terrestrial ecosystems, and has a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry and biodiversity. Research focuses on aquatic ecology and biodiversity, biogeochemical and hydrological processes in catchments, aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. The department has about 100 employees, of which half are senior scientists, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students and the other half are laboratory, technical and administrative staff.

Kvalifikationer: Applicants should hold an MSc in aquatic ecology/limnology, ecology or equivalent. Ideally, the candidate should be familiar with aquatic and/or terrestrial food webs and land-use effects on the biogeochemistry and biological diversity of stream and terrestrial ecosystems, and have skills in univariate and multivariate statistical analysis. Experience with field and laboratory experiments, data handling and in using a variety of statistical software (e.g. R, Canoco) would all be considered as merits. A valid drivers license is essential, and proficiency in English (both spoken and written) is required. Evidence of English proficiency may be required (see below).

The application should include a Curriculum Vitae, a short description of experience indicating your suitability for the position and why you are interested, copies of degree certificates from higher education, a record of relevant publication where applicable, contact information of at least two references, and ideally a written reference from at least one referee. Candidates from outside Scandinavia or countries where English is not a native language, should be able to provide evidence of proficiency in English (e.g. a TOEFL certificate or equivalent) or that it was the main language of a significant part of their education.
