We are looking to hire an Associate Principal Scientist (APS) within our Medicinal Chemistry department in the therapeutic area of Respiratory & Immunology (R&I). In this position you will get the opportunity to lead research in a highly creative and collaborative discovery team embedded in a science driven environment, leveraging innovative Organic and Medicinal Chemistry to invent novel drug candidates.



We are searching for a Medicinal Chemist with extensive experience working with synthesis and design of small molecules and/or PROTACs. The discovery research within our department spans across small molecules, Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs), peptides and oligonucleotides. What you'll do?

As an APS in the Early R&I Medicinal Chemistry department you will play an important role in advancing drug discovery projects from target validation to preclinical phase. You will join a highly integrated discovery team leveraging innovative Medicinal Chemistry to invent novel medicines. Your focus will be on design, synthesis and characterization of drug molecules and you will be expected to lead by example with expertise and integrity, following the science and collaborating across discipline boundaries. You will ensure uptake of novel scientific developments into project teams and lead chemistry teams and compound design by generating creative and novel ideas for our molecules. You will also be expected to share scientific findings to a broader internal and external audience and to publish your results.



We are looking for a person with a strong scientific curiosity and a solid background in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry. You should be up-to-date with recent trends in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry and have a constant drive to develop and to implement new approaches. Excellent communication and leadership skills and a strong ability to collaborate across disciplines are important skills in this role: as an APS you will lead chemistry projects.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Support Early R&I drug discovery programs through design and synthesis of potential drug molecules
*

Provide state-of-the-art synthetic organic chemistry to projects at all stages of drug discovery delivering potential drug molecules and tool compounds
*

Collect, analyze and interpret project data. Propose hypotheses and plan how to test them
*

Collaborate and lead chemistry teams in the development, planning and prioritization of route design, sharing findings and jointly solving scientific questions in the projects
*

Drive R&I 's scientific reputation by presenting and publishing your results within the department, across AZ and externally
*

Lead chemistry programs and represent the medicinal chemistry discipline in cross functional teams
*

Follow safety requirements and all AZ corporate responsibility policies



Essential for the role

*

PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or Biochemistry
*

>5y of professional experience as Medicinal Chemist in Pharmaceutical Industry, biotech or CRO
*

In-depth scientific knowledge and recent practical experience in the area of synthetic chemistry
*

Up-to-date with the application of modern purification and analytical techniques
*

A proven track record of delivery from own experimental and project work
*

Excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills
*

Knowledge of the pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process
