Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities. The University has 42 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Medicine is a part of Lund University, and is responsible for education and research within medicine and healthcare. Our academic programs are closely linked with the healthcare system and are firmly anchored in the faculty's strong research tradition. Our research spans a broad field within experimental preclinical research, near-patient clinical research and health sciences research. The Faculty of Medicine, with its 1,800 employees and 2,700 students in Lund and Malmö, is a knowledge-intensive meeting place for students, teachers and researchers from all over the world.

The Membrane Protein Structural Biology Group at the department works on structural and functional characterizing of membrane proteins that are essential for human health and highly attractive targets in the treatment of disease.

The overarching aim is to reveal the molecular principles and determinants of transport processes across cellular membranes. To this end, we use a number of complementary techniques centered on X-ray crystallography using the latest techniques within membrane protein structural biology to study structure-function relationships. We have previously shed light on how copper and zinc transport is established in P-type ATPases, and also provided a framework to analyze missense mutations in the equivalent human proteins that are linked to severe disorders [Nature 475:59-64 (2011); Nat Struct Mol Biol. 21:43-8 (2014); Nature 514:518-22 (2014)].

Job Description: An Assistant Researcher Position is now available in The Membrane Protein Structural Biology Group. The recruited person will focus on structural characterization of a group of membrane proteins that are essential for transition metal homeostasis and will be guided by Dr. Pontus Gourdon. The tasks will include cloning, cell culturing, optimization of protein production levels, solubilization, detergent screening, protein purification, functional studies, crystallization and structure determination using X-ray crystallography.

Required qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in protein biochemistry, structural biology or an equivalent field, and documented experience with structural characterization approaches of proteins. Candidates should have experience with crystallization, data collection of X-ray diffraction and structure determination techniques. Preference will be for candidates with a Ph.D. awarded within the last five years, with experience in cloning, production of membrane proteins, solubilization of membrane proteins and purification of membrane proteins. Experience with inner and outer membrane proteins - production, purification and crystallization is considered a particular advantage. Furthermore, fluency in English, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently as well as scientific maturity and creativity are required.

The application should be written in English and include:

• cover letter with a brief description of the candidate, research interests and why you apply for this particular position

• CV, including list of publications

• manuscripts

• Diploma and transcripts of records (including grades)

• At least two references (names, email addresses and telephone numbers)

Terms of employment: Temporary employment, 100 %, 2017-08-19 - 2018-08-18.
