AstraZeneca is now looking to recruit a Director/Associate Director to join the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) bioscience department as a Scientific Leader for CKD Early Stage Portfolio. The role is within the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) therapeutic area placed at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Business area CVRM IMED

AstraZeneca has a patient-centric approach for discovering novel treatments for patients with chronic kidney disease, metabolic disease and cardiovascular disease. The three areas are integrated into one unit - the cardiovascular, renal and metabolism, innovative medicines unit (CVRM IMED). At the CKD Bioscience department, we focus on identifying and validating new drug targets for patients with kidney disease. The department delivers key data to projects across all phases of the drug discovery and development.

The Role

As a Scientific Leader, CKD Early Stage Portfolio you will be leading a cross-functional team of senior scientists with the overall responsible for building the early portfolio in CKD, be part of the CKD leadership team and play a key role in leading early projects forward within the area of vascular, glomerular and tubular health and within the cardio-renal area. You will independently and together with the team identify and explore novel drug targets and support existing projects with scientific input and deliver key input to in vitro and in vivo scientists. Collaboration is critical for successful delivery of drug projects and you will work closely with scientists/teams from a wide range of different functions within AstraZeneca as well as with external partners and collaborators. You will work with several different CKD targets and will have the opportunity bring in novel techniques and ideas required for progressing existing portfolio and novel science. In conclusion, you will drive innovation and scientific excellence according to CKD strategy through external collaborations, publications and building partnerships with other companies.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Responsibility for the early portfolio in CKD
* Drive projects as CKD lead
* Participate in IMED and therapy area strategy work
* Evaluate external investment opportunities
* Lead scientific projects within the IMED.

Essential Requirements

* PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent in renal pathophysiology or a related area
* Broad background and comprehensive understanding of CKD biology
* Experience in leading projects
* Superb academic credibility
* Good collaboration skills
* Strong oral and written communication skills
* Background in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry is desirable
