The Department: The department has about 65 employees, primarily in the city of Skara, which is located in Sweden's most agricultural animal-dense area, as well as in Uppsala and Gothenburg. Agronomists, ethologists, veterinarians, biologists, ethics as well as technical and administrative staff work here. The department is responsible for SLU Götala beef and lamb meat research, located just outside Skara.

Research: The department is responsible for both basic and applied research in the areas animal environment and health, ethology, animal welfare, animal ethics, meat science, ruminant nutrition, agricultural economics and animal production systems. The research is carried out in collaboration with i.e. the agricultural industry, authorities and other universities within regional, national and international networks.

Education: The department educates students at the bachelor and master levels on the ethology and animal welfare program, the veterinary program, the animal science program, the sport and companion animals program and the veterinary nursing program.

Duties:
Animal welfare is a complex area that consists of a combination of everything from veterinary medicine and nutrition to physiological and behavioral needs. The goal of FRESH is to connect all the sciences needed to understand the different needs of animals and thus better understand how humans affect fish in different ways.

In the project, we will investigate how different species of fish respond to various challenges that are directly or indirectly created by humans. The underlying causes of the challenges experienced by fishes will vary considerably. Within the project we work both with applied research questions aiming to improve the welfare of salmonid fish species in Scandinavian aquaculture and with conservations research questions investigating how the ongoing climate changes are affecting wild populations of the Atlantic Cod.

The work tasks will include data collection, data analyses and data assimilation. The practical work will be done both in the lab and in the field. Techniques that will be used include blood vessel cannulations and respirometry.

Qualifications:

• Completed doctoral degree in fish physiology or equivalent.
• Formal and practical training in fish surgery.
• Research record of accomplishment and experience of methods used to investigate cardiorespiratory effects in fish.
• Good knowledge in spoken and written English.
• Good communication skills and experience of working in a team.

Place of work:
The person will be employed by the Department of Animal Environment and Health at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, but large parts of the work will be located at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Gothenburg (GU), which will be the main geographical location of the position. Some of the practical work will be situated either on commercial fish farms or at one of our collaborating universities the position will require some travels mainly within the Nordic countries.
