We invite applications for a three-year Early Stage Researcher (Ph.D. student) position being part of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Initial Training Network transMed. The young researcher will be involved in a multi-disciplinary drug development project focusing on a novel class of compounds with strong neuroprotective properties in diseases of the retina.

The position will be a three year employment contract at RISE in Södertälje in Sweden. The goal is to reach the PhD title. The candidate will be enrolled at the faculty of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Iceland that will give the degree. The University of Iceland is a full partner in the Marie Sklodowska Curie Initial Training Network transMed.

Neurodegenerative diseases of the retina are a major cause of blindness and are often untreatable. The project concerns the pharmaceutical development of novel cyclic nucleotides. This includes the identification of stable solid form(s) which are promising for further development and to develop crystallisation methods with adequate impurity control according to ICH Guidelines as well as desired crystal form(s).

Job description

The thesis work will involve mapping of the solid state of selected molecule(s) using various techniques such as (single crystal) X-ray powder, dynamic vapour sorption, microcalorimetry, SEM and others. For this crystallisation screens will be performed. The thesis work will involve development and lab scale up of suitable chemical processes in batch and/or continuous mode of operations. Optimisation of promising conditions for crystallisation will be performed using Design of Experiments and factorial experimental design in order to define the design space for the crystallisation method(s), and characterise key parameters to robustly deliver a defined stable solid form suitable for formulation). Sustainability of the developed processes will be a key performance parameter

The project will be performed in a strong international collaboration with partners from academia and industry, located in six different European countries.

Eligibility criteria
