UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is advertising for an Associate Legal Officer position within the Protection and Legal Unit, Stockholm, Sweden.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of women, men and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution.
• Within the UNHCR Representation for the Nordic and Baltic Countries (RNB), this position focuses mainly on the Swedish policies in the area of asylum and the rights and obligations of asylum-seekers and refugees. RNB is an advocacy operation with focus on support for the development of laws and policies, capacity building and cross-fertilization of good practices. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring developments, assessing and analyzing the Swedish national legal framework, practice and policies in the area of asylum, durable solutions and statelessness vis-à-vis international and European legal standards and UNHCR positions. The incumbent thus needs to have a strong combination of legal, advocacy and policy development skills.
• The incumbent has to represent UNHCR and manage working level contacts with authorities, civil society, the legal community, persons of concern and other stakeholders and partners in Sweden in an effective manner. The incumbent thus needs to have strong networking skills and ability to navigate in an advanced asylum and integration system. Considering the complex protection environment, including Sweden as an important donor and protection partner for UNHCR globally and within Europe, the incumbent has to display political awareness and tact when exercising UNHCR's supervisory responsibility and promoting its protection positions.
